XDefiant‘s announcement and eventual release excited many people about the free-to-play, fast-paced arena shooter. Fans began calling it the upcoming‘Call of Dutykiller.’ While the overall response to the game was mixed or average, most gamers still seem optimistic about its potential.
The game is still very young, and unlike the currentCall of Dutygames, it is entirely first-generation, meaning there is still plenty of room for improvement. Fans are pointing out the title’s demerits, and the game team is attempting to read the room.

XDefiant’s Lack of a Decent Progression System Means That There Is No Incentive to Grind
XDefiant, despite not being incredibly old, has come under fire various times ever since its launch.More recently, players questioned why the game’s makerssaw fit to penalize players who would spam the jump buttonbetween a firefight.
“Still coming. More complicated mode to make”: XDefiant is Working Tirelessly to Introduce One Mode That Could Make it the New Counter-Strike
Complaints regarding the game seem to continue, as the game’s current state doesn’t feel rewarding to players who want to grind. According to fans, the fundamental progression system associated with grinding a competitive first-person game seems missing from the game’s recipe.
This led to the game’s executive producer, Mark Rubin, conducting a poll on his public X account and asking players the level of progress they usually make with their weapon mastery after every game:

For those that have played since the patch went out this morning can you look to see how much progress you are making towards your weapon mastery (without Boosters). I’m right about at 1 level per game. Especially looking for people who play casually to respond.
The poll results show a very similar split among all options, with most being in the 20s and 30 percent of players progressing at one level per game. In the post’s comment section, however, one player pointed out why the game doesn’t feel rewarding and why there is no reason for players to invest time and grind.

Despite the strongly worded comment criticizing the game, this is how Rubin responded to the player:
We’re listening.
This shows the challenges when a new game tries to saturate a market dominated by Activision’s premier FPS shooter series. While competition is always good for the consumer, it increases expectations.
XDefiant Has Been Accused of Only Catering to Casuals Before
With or without an emphasis on grinding and competing with other players, most games find a way to lure players in and keep them playing. However, Ubisoft’s latest arena shooter wasn’t designed with that in mind.
“I love how involved you are, man”: XDefiant’s Mark Rubin Has Had Enough of Hackers, and Fans are Treating Him Like A Personal Hit Squad Against the Wave of Cheaters Invading the Game
Possibly, the game’s target audience is used to grinding and feeling rewarded, thanks to other games in the genre. That could be whyXDefiantwas considered a game for casual players only, even before Mark Rubin’s poll and the criticism he received from a player.
I had faith in xdefiant but seems like they are already ruining their game to cater to casuals, back to the no game is fun

However, it seems like there are players on the opposite end of the spectrum who like the sans SBMM casual playlist for people who only play for fun:
I see how your first point is “remove sbmm”. Have you tried XDefiant? Theirs NO sbmm in casuals. However their IS sbmm in rank.pic.twitter.com/tfwr9VsVGg
It will most likely be challenging for the team to sustain the game while ensuring that it does not receive any flak from casual or competitive players. Regardless, it is a no-brainer that this Arena Shooter by Ubisoft has plenty of time and scope to find its identity.
