During an interview with The Associated Press, Spader spoke about giving Red the perfect ending, with his story coming full circle in the finale. The actor was glad the team was able to end the story on their terms, hinting the time had come for Red’s story to conclude.

It was deliberate and we weren’t taken by surprise in terms of when the ending was going to come. You’ll see that the ending has conviction and we commit to it.
Spader made the above statement (viaUSA Today), explaining the show’s finale would give Red an emotional farewell. As a result, it was only natural for the series to run its course, without overstaying its welcome and tarnishing its legacy.

Because of these tonal shifts within the show’s overall structure, Spader felt that viewers liked Red despite the character being a scary criminal and committing monstrous crimes to an extent.
