Taylor Sheridan made a name for himself as a master filmmaker in the field of Western crime thriller, and he has produced some of the most well-known series on television, such asYellowstone,Tulsa King, andMayor of Kingstown.
For an all-around creative like him who constantly switches hats for different projects, many fans would assume he follows a guide or timetable when writing scripts. It’s important to have a clear vision of what a writer wants to achieve in his script, but apparently, Sheridan doesn’t like structured plots or even making outlines.
Taylor Sheridan refuses to make outlines for scripts
One of the best ways to create a coherent and effective script is to have an outline or some sort of guide that will serve as the backbone of a story. A show likeYellowstone—with its complicated plot and several dramatic turns—definitely needed one, and it seemed likeTaylor Sheridanskipped this part.
In his interview about his writing process viaUtah Film Studios, he revealed he really does not follow such technique because he likes to surprise himself with what he could come up with along the way:
I think the best stories are when you don’t plot it out, and you let yourself go on a journey, and you’re as surprised to see what happens next as the person who’s gonna read it, and so that’s how I like to write.
This is an efficient way when one is focused on a sole project, but Sheridan is attached to several shows as a writer, director, and producer, and not plotting his scripts could be detrimental to the overall story. It could lead to needless dramas that don’t even add substance to the plot, such as theunnecessary killing spreeinYellowstone’s Season 5 and the expedited death of John Dutton due toKevin Costner’s exit.

Sheridan also starred in the series as Travis Wheatley and many fans criticized the character for always hogging the spotlight despite being a supporting character. In fact, he had more screen time in the final season than what’s required of the role. It’s safe to say that this is due to Sheridan’s lack of structure in terms of writing, which consequently ruins the core plot of the series.

Sheridan echoed the same sentiment in his conversation withCreative Screenwriting. The filmmaker said he usually relies on the story unfolding on its own, so he doesn’t really think much about how the plot would end. “I don’t outline. I like to go on a journey and my writing style is that I don’t like to rewrite,” he said.
