Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Review
Bird is the word.
The Demon of Obsession is a secret boss that might be one of the game’s toughest bosses. Beating her will not only give you new gear, but also give you a chance to unlock the"Dream’s Sweet Deceit" true ending.
What’s scarier than an enemy who can do everything that you can do but better? The Demon of Obsession can fire off powerful spells with seemingly infiniteSkyborn Might, along with intense, never-before-seen acrobatic moves.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to beat her, including recommended builds, a peek into her moveset, and strategies for making this tough fight more tolerable.
Where To Find Demon Of Obsession
The Demon of Obsession will only appear if you’re on the path to completing the"Dream’s Sweet Deceit" ending.
To make the Demon of Obsession available, you must have all four chisels (Aurum, Vermillion, Jade, Cyan) in your inventory while you’re at Shrine Dwelling, which isa hidden area that is only accessible via a riddle door right next to the Capital Depths shrine in the Bo Capital in Chapter 5.

Answer"The wheel turns anew"when prompted, and the doors will drag you into a black mist, teleporting you to the Shrine Dwelling area.
Barring a miniboss, the Demon of Obsession is the only enemy you face in the Shrine Dwelling, so gear up.

Demon of Obsession has a complex moveset and deals almost all kinds of damage. She wields a spear and a one-handed sword, and her basic attacks can deal Stabbing and Slashing damage, while her fists seem to deal both Blunt and Lightning damage.
Her spells, on the other hand, deal equal parts Magic and Feathering damage, while being capable of inflicting Frostbite and Paralysis status effects.

With that said, the armor really depends on which kind of damage you’re most worried about. As always, the Centipede armor set from theBlightweaverboss has the highest Stabbing and Slashing damage mitigation, while the Avian Hunter’s armor set has the highest Magic and Feathering damage mitigation, while having decent elemental protection andstatus effect resistances.
you’re able to get the Avian Hunter set by acquiring a giant arrow from the Bo Capital area and trading it with Wu Gang.
While I normally would recommend thelongsword build,as it is a hill I have always died on, I’ve since expanded my horizons and tried out other builds as per the suggestion of my fellow writers.
Because I’m not a one-trick pony, I found thatan axe build is incredibly effective against smaller human enemieslike the Demon of Obsession, as a single heavy attack can knock down a boss with relative ease.
You can also use this same strategy and weapon against Vermillion Feathers to make it a much easier fight.
You’ll have plenty of points by now to be able to invest them into two or more skill trees at once. Along with the axe build,I recommend putting on a weapon that can quickly build up Skyborn Might charges to supplement it,like a longsword orone-handed sword (if you want to use magic).
You can also stock up onPlumed Branchesto ensure you have max stacks.
Invest heavily in Strength, Endurance, and Agility stats, and put what you can intomaxing out your Manna Vase charges and Weapon mastery.
The main form of damage you’ll be using for this boss fight will be the axe’s light attack combo and theRampage Discipline skill, along with its two upgrade nodes. Because of the sheer weight of the axe, it can frequently knock down and interrupt the boss’s attacks for some free damage.
Along with Lashing Whip for its extended reach to proc Sword Saint on its second hit, I would recommend using theScorn Axe as your main weapon. While its Weapon skill deals a hefty amount of damage and can quickly build up Burn, it doesn’t hit as quickly as Rampage.
For this fight, parrying is only viable for the first half, as her spells cannot be parried.
We won’t really be needingTemperance needles,as you can’t use Temperance on heavy two-handed weapons like the axe and spear. Still, if you prefer using a sword, then focus on improving your Temperance duration, attack power, and Agility control while having Poise Break to synergize with Lashing Whip’s passive boost.
BenedictionsandJade Pendantsthat increase your damage and stamina gain will be helpful here, asyou will be burning through your stamina a lot for this fight, thanks to how much energy it takes to use the axe.
Tiger is a must-have, and Twin Infant and Dragon-Fish are interchangeable pendants, though you may have them both simultaneously.
Spellswon’t be much use here, as the Demon of Obsession seems to have some damage resistance against Magic and Feathering damage. But if you’re more partial to using spells, then I would still suggest checking out theMagic build here.
Regardless,Ethereal Form is a must-have for this fight (and any fight, for that matter),as it is the most overpowered spell in the game.
It’s the perfect panic button for you to make a quick escape, or if you need some breathing room to watch and learn the boss’s attack patterns.
Demon Of Obsession Moveset
First Phase (Spear)
As you enter the arena, the Demon of Obsession will be approaching you from your right, and will begin by attacking you with her spear.
By now, you’ve already facedZhao Yunand have experienced the toughest spear-wielder in the game, soDemon of Obsession should feel somewhat tame in comparison.
Most of her spear attacks will be fluid swings, thrusts, and lunges that are essentially the light and heavy attack combos that you can already do with your spear, but are alsostronger versions of the very same Discipline and Weapon skills that you have access to.
Since Demon of Obsession uses theRed Tasseled Spear, she can use the Weapon skill “Ebb and Flow,” allowing her to charge forward, dealing continuous stab damage. As well as her weapon skill, she can also have the following Discipline skills:
She may occasionally attempt to knock you back with an AOE spell that resembles the Echo of theBo Magus, except without the shielding. She can also summon lightning bolts to strike randomly, or even target you specifically.
She’ll also forego her weapons to square up, imbuing her fists with lightning and striking you with a flurry of punches and kicks with exceptional tracking. Think of a faster, scarier version of theSouth General.
It’s hard to predict how and when she’ll strike, and her unarmed attacks surprisingly deal way more damage than any of her weapons, as they deal a combo of Blunt and Lightning damage.
Ethereal Form may be necessary to avoid getting pummeled.
But you’re not the only one who can use Ethereal Form.Demon of Obsession can disappear in a mist and reappear behind youin a “Heh, nothin' personnel, kid” fashion and strike you when you least expect it.
Second Phase (Spells)
Once you get her to half health, she’ll switch to her one-handed sword and begin attacking you with a whole host of spells. They’re deadlier variations of the ones you might already have in your repertoire.
The only attacks that you might not be familiar with are a tornado strike that she can send out as a vortex, and Phantom Flurry, a unique Weapon Skillof the Watcher’s Gaze one-handed sword, which is only available if you’ve purchased the Deluxe edition. Talk about pay-to-win.
Phantom Flurry is a Weapon Skill that sends out four waves of magical slashes in quick succession, and is thankfully easily avoidable.
Because most of her spells are ones that you may already be familiar with, I’ll only be listing the names of those spells, while clarifying what has changed:
Not only that, but Demon of Obsession can also use Dual Blade attacks by summoning a magical blade in her offhand, allowing her to useDual Blade Discipline skillslikeShadow LungeandWhirling Flurry. This also lets her use a magical variation of theFeathered WindstrikeWeapon Skill that is normally exclusive to the Serpent Fang longsword from theLi Dingo miniboss.
The Demon of Obsession has an extensive list of attacks, and there may be more that she hasn’t shown during my fight with her. But much like Nightmare Demon, almost all her attacks are available to you,so I would recommend getting familiar with your spear and one-handed sword light attack patterns, and how each spell lands.
One more thing: even when you knock her down, she can dodge away with Ethereal Form before you may finish your combo. A bit unfair that she can do this since we can’t, if you ask me.
How To Beat Demon Of Obsession
There are two ways to beat the Demon of Obsession: the normal way and the cheesy way.
As mentioned previously, we’ll be mainly using the Scorn axe for its high base damage and the Discipline skill Rampage, which will easily send her flying for you to deal some extra damage.
Lashing Whip or any one-handed sword (provided you have the right perks) can be used to quickly generate Skyborn Might stacks if you run out.
Like most melee builds, our goal is to pin down the boss as much as we can.Rampage is perfect for this,as it can launch the boss into the air and knock her down, giving you a chance to land a full light combo and maybe even more.
Not only that, but its light attacks can interrupt the majority of her attacks, stun-locking her for you to connect your last attack and generate three Skyborn stacks thanks to the Thunderous Cleave perk, which will then allow you to unleash a full-powered Rampage.
you may repeat this cycle for as long as you need to, but once the second phase rolls in,you’ll need to be more aggressive,as she’ll quickly roll away before you can get your last hit in.
As always, Ethereal Form comes in clutch when you need help dodging and generating Skyborn Might, somake sure you always have at least one stack ready to go.
If or when you run out of Skyborn Might stacks, and you’re having a hard time generating them, I recommend bringing a Plumed Branch as a consumable on your quick access slot to get full stacks.
Because of the slow windup, make sure to use Rampage right after she ends her attack combo.Stay close, keep popping Ethereal Form, and find an opening to slam into her with your axe.
With the axe, you can also Clash weapons, and thanks to your boosted Tenacity, you can cut through her attacks and even stun-lock her while she’s using her basic melee combos.
The above video is the cheesy way. When you enter the boss arena, you’ll notice a slightly raised platform to your left. It would seem that the Demon of Obsession’s enemy AI has a fatal flaw, as it cannot figure out how to go around the stairs to get to you.
All you need to do is lure the boss to a spot away from the stairs, and when she’s busy attacking, immediately dash up to the platform, putting the raised steps between you and her. That way, she won’t know what to do and will continue to try to walk straight to you, except that the raised step is blocking her way.
Mind you, this isn’t foolproof. She’ll still try to attack you and use spells, and can teleport straight to you when she disappears with Ethereal Form. All this does is give you plenty of space to fire spells of your own without her breathing down your neck, and you may even use the large bronze cauldron on the platform as cover.
If she does manage to get to you, you may repeat this process and get her stuck again.
Once you beat Demon of Obsession, you may now proceed to the altar and combine the two Rings of Samsara.
Make sure to use the “Sacrifice” emote on the cauldron nearby to get some lore tidbits and an extra Red Mercury Essence.
