THQ Nordic and Bugbear Entertainment’sWreckfestis a project that has seen a ton of delays. After entering Early Access in 2014, it’s “full” 1.0 release was pushed back multiple times beforeit finally launched for PCon June 14 after 1611 days in Early Access. The PS4 and Xbox One versionsWreckfest, which were supposed to launch in 2017, initially had a release date of June 17, 2025, but that is no longer the case.
The PS4 and Xbox One versions ofWreckfesthave been indefinitely pushed back to 2019. There is currently no firm release window outside of “as soon as we love playing it.” That being said, the developers were fairly honest in explaining why the ports were delayed. They simply weren’t up to snuff yet.
Both console ports ofWreckfeststill have performance problems, and the multiplayer portion of the game needs to be polished quite a bit more beforeWreckfestis ready for primetime on consoles. Instead of putting out a buggy product that isn’t fun to play, Bugbear Entertainment and THQ Nordic have decided to push the game back until it is polished and ready to be released sometime in 2019.
In an era of tumultuous and buggy launches, it’s nice to see that at least the PS4 and Xbox One versions ofWreckfestare escaping that fate. This fall is super crowded with interesting titles as well, so releasing sometime in 2019 should also give the console ports ofWreckfestmore room to breathe and be noticed.
The developers also plan on compensating players for the wait with some new console-exclusive vehicles that previously weren’t planned for the game. That being said, those of you who want to pick upWreckfestfor PC right nowcan do so via Humble Bundle. You can check out THQ Nordic Senior Producer Roger Joswig’s full statement on the delay below:
“Wreckfestfor consoles will only be released as soon as we love playing it. After the fantastic release on PC, the benchmark for the console release is much higher. At this moment, the team needs more time to polish the multiplayer part, as well as the overall performance on the game to bring it up to par with the experience on PC. We are sorry for keeping fans waiting longer because of this. However, we already have compensation in the form of further vehicles, including a special crazy vehicle, in the works for consoles. "
