Well, Agatha is here, and she brings all the fun with her. With its first trailer, Kathryn Hahn’sAgatha All Alongpromises a trippy voyage into the craziest corners of the Marvel Comics universe. Filled with scenes from a fever dream, Marvel’s new series is a long-awaited apology letter to the fans if it really lives up to the hype.

In a setting portraying all the classic visuals from those ubiquitous network television crime thrillers,Agatha All Alongbegins and ends the same wayWandaVisiondid — enveloped in mysticism and zaniness. But while Wanda lost herself in the sitcoms of the bygone decades, Agatha starts by surrounding herself with death and foreboding calamity.

Agatha Harkness and Her Coven of Chaos

IfTrue Detectivewithout all the monologues was set in the town of Forks (for the uneducated, that’s the residential hunting ground for theTwilightvampires), it would look a lot like theintro toAgatha All Along. A murder — that by the looks of it is set to be the case that haunts the detective forever — brings the titular purple witch to the heart of a forest. Gloom and desolation set the tone for the unfolding crime thriller that could be easily mistaken forBroadchurchorMare of Easttownat first glance, minus the A-listers.

However, the series easily avoids falling into the trappings of a generic crime thriller marred by death, tragedy, and the psychological unraveling of the titular detective — well, perhaps the latter still sticks for Agatha. A perfectly-timed entry from Hollywood’s favorite weird celebrity,Aubrey Plaza, brings an end to the illusion, however. Gone are the simpler days when one could witness a maladaptedKate Winsletwannabe running around, solving the murder that shook the town.

Marvel has, in a long (long) time, decidedly surprised its fans withAgatha All Along. But perhaps, one speaks too soon. The trailer, although bearing the hope of redemption for Phase Four and a renaissance of good television, even for a season, cannot speak to the whole experience.
