While the film launched her into the stratosphere, she came from an incredibly talented family.

Sandra Bullock Spent Her Childhood In Germany

WhileSandra Bullockmay be America’s Sweetheart, the actress has German roots. Though born in Virginia, the actress’ mother was a German opera singer while her father was in the Army. He was reportedly stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, and Bullock spent the majority of her childhood in the country. She is reportedly fluent in German (viaBritannica).

The actress reportedly even accompanied her mother to her concerts and was sometimes included in the performances. She said toEW,

My mom [Helga] was a German opera singer and in every opera, there’s always some disheveled Gypsy kid in the background. That was me. I already had the matted hair and a dirty face, so all they had to do was throw me on stage.

The actress was reportedly trying for a German passport back in 2009 ahead of the release ofThe Proposal. She reportedly said that it was important for her mother that she and her sister Gessine Bullock-Prado would make their German identity official (viaThe Local). The actress reportedly then shuttled between her parents during her teens.

Sandra Bullock Has Vague Memories Of Her Role InThe Vanishing

Sandra Bullock came from a line of artists, with both her mother and father in showbusiness. Bullock fell in love with acting at a young and performed on stage, on TV, and in film before she got regular roles. While she did lead an indie calledWho Shot Pat?, she had one of her first mainstream roles in the Jeff Bridges-starrerThe Vanishing.

Bullock appears only in the film’s first twenty minutes and is the first victim in the psychological thriller. She said to EW about the role,

The main thing I remember about that movie. was a scene in which my head drops into Jeff Bridges’ lap. I was like, ‘Is this a great job, or what?’

The actress went on to star in her first rom-comLove Potion No.9, which also sawF.R.I.E.N.D.S’Tate Donovan in the leading role. She also played a supporting role inBionic Showdownand the NBC sitcomWorking Girl, which was based on the Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver starring film of the same name. It only lasted twelve episodes.

The actress spoke about her character onBionic Showdown, which involved a crossover between the showsThe Six Million Dollar ManandThe Bionic Woman. The interview withETin retrospect sees a lot of the self-deprecating humor and nonchalance that Bullock became famous for after her breakthrough. She said,

Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock

I think people can relate to it a lot more because they’re bringing the human side. You know, I can fall down a flight of stairs. I can say something stupid… as we’ve seen in this interview.

Bullock also had her first foray into the blockbuster space with the Sylvester Stallone starrerDemolition Man, which she claimed was thrown onto her at the last minute as the original actress was dropped two days into production (via EW).

Sandra Bullock Was Not The First Choice ForSpeed

Sandra Bullock played Annie Porter, the reluctant teacher-turned-bus driver aboard a public bus that has been fixed with a bomb inSpeed. While the film was mostly focused on Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper’s enmity, the action blockbuster turned out to be a breakout role for Bullock as her part got insane recognition.

While it is impossible to imagine anyone else as Annie now, Bullock was reportedly not the first choice for the character. In fact, the whole character of Annie was reportedly completely different in the original draft, and was actually initially envisioned as an African-American paramedic. Screenwriter Graham Yost said in an interview withEWon the decision,

For one thing, that’s convenient, and even the driver’s ed thing was kind of convenient as well, so she just became a person. One of the ironies was after we made it just whatever this character will be, the first person we went to was Halle Berry, and she was not interested.

Once Berry rejected the role and the character was changed to an iteration of Annie, Yost apparently wanted Ellen DeGeneres for the part. According toUproxx, the studio had considered other actors like Meryl Streep, Kim Basinger, and Anne Heche for the role, but they all rejected it.

SpeedDirector Fought For Sandra Bullock To Be A Part Of The Film

From Halle Berry to Meryl Streep to Ellen DeGeneres, the character of Annie passed through several hands before it landed on Sandra Bullock. Though in retrospect she is the perfect person for the role, Bullock’s status as an upcoming actress reportedly did not bid her well with the studio and she was initially rejected.

However, director Jan de Bont reportedly fought for Bullock as he saw the character of Annie as an everyday woman and not someone who would be instantly recognized as a star. He said (via Uproxx),

I could not see Julia Roberts driving this bus. I could not see several other actresses. I would never believe they would ever even be on a bus. I felt I needed an actress who you could believe would have taken the bus, and Sandra had this kind of every day look – I mean that in a good way – in the way she dresses, the way she behaves, very casual.

While today Bullock may be as big as Julia Roberts (or bigger), the actress came with the exact requirement for the role, which she claimed was her biggest acting lesson. Bullock said that she got her bus driver’s license for the film and the task of having to make multiple scenes where she is just sitting and driving interesting taught her a lot (viaEW).
