Joker: Folie à Deuxis set to do something that Christopher Nolan would never have done with his iteration of the Joker inThe Dark Knight. Director Todd Phillips talked to Empire Magazine about how he has chosen to approach his version of The Joker.

While the Joker in Nolan’sThe Dark Knightleaned heavily into his criminal mastermind persona, something that Todd Phillips revealed he would be against doing with Arthur Fleck. This Joker had taken a different route and represented something else for the people of Gotham instead of a criminal psychopath.
Todd Phillips says that Arthur Fleck is a symbol for the people of Gotham
The Arthur Fleck that audiences met in Phillip’s Joker, was not a gangster or a criminal of any kind. He did kill a few people, but that was not at the core of his personality, as is the case with some other versions of the character.Todd Phillips, speaking toEmpire, said:
Arthur has become this symbol to people. This unwilling, unwitting symbol now paying for the crimes of the first film, but at the same time finding the only thing he ever wanted, which was love. That’s always what he’s been about, even though he’s been pushed and pulled in all these directions. So we tried to just make the most pure version of that.

Unlike the Joker that fans got to know inThe Dark Knight, the Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips’ world is far from a criminal mastermind and will be depicted as such inJoker: Folie à Deux.
The character will actually explore his obsession withLady Gaga‘s Harley Quinn, which will also be a novel take on the character, as opposed to her origin as it was set in her first appearance in Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series.

The Dark Knighthad the quintessential version of The Joker for an entire generation
Heath Ledger‘s portrayal of the Joker is widely considered one of the best iterations of the character in modern memory. If it had not been for Ledger’s tragic passing, the actor would have played this iconic version of the character a second time inThe Dark Knight Returns.
“New type of Joker, I see”: Fans Stunned as Todd Phillips Closes the Door on the Final Ray of Hope for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker to Fight Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the Reeves-Verse
The character was very different in the version that Joaquin Phoenix essayed, and while it was well-received by fans and critics alike, existed completely divorced from Batman of its own.
While this might be the case as to why the character is not looked at as the supervillain that he is, it needs to be taken into consideration that the film took more insertion from the likes ofTaxi Driverthan it did from any comics, save the aspects it picked up from Alan Moore’sThe Killing Joker.
