For the longest time, Taylor Sheridan was in a state of deep hibernation, scraping out a living as an actor when his real talents lay elsewhere. After 20 years of his acting career essentially made him feel creatively suffocated, Sheridan took to the page and began to weave together stories of profound value to the industry as well as the audience.

FromWind RivertoYellowstone, there is very little that intimidates Taylor Sheridan. Despite having no schooling on that front nor any agent or coaching, the actor-turned-filmmaker quickly established himself as a celebrated, in-demand, and award-winning screenwriter. And it wasSicariothat began it all.

In 2014, a weird turn of events ended up elevating an actor down and out of his luck to a level that was more his style. AfterSons of Anarchy,Taylor Sheridanrose to prominence in Hollywood by quitting the job that paid him no importance to writing scripts that studio execs would kill each other over.

With no job or any certainty about his future, Sheridan penned the story ofSicarioarmed only with an intimate knowledge of the world around him. When interviewed byUproxxafter the success of the film, the writer revealed the details of how this story eventually took shape on paper.

The ‘Yellowstone’ Controversy That Knocked Taylor Sheridan off His High Pedestal Before Kevin Costner Feud

In the interview, Sheridan revealed:

I’m a bit of a history buff and a bit serious about world affairs and it was the height of the Mexican drug war, but people weren’t really talking about it. The atrocities that I was reading about were not really being discussed, which was fascinating because Mexico’s our closest cultural neighbor, it’s our physical neighbor, and we’re the ones buying all this crap. It exists as a result of us. We drive the demand.

While the cross-border drug war continues to haunt the US and Mexico today, Sicario helped shine a more direct and brighter light on it than any other film before it. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Sicario went on to have a profound impact on the industry as studios realized that mature, violent, female-led, and morally ambiguous films too have a market of their own.

Taylor Sheridan reclaimed his own fate in Hollywood

The tale of how a beat-down actor turned his luck around to becomeone of the greatest screenwriters currently working in Hollywoodis quite famous. Countless articles have been published about how the producers ofSons of Anarchymessed up by killing his character off after Sheridan asked for a bigger role and a bigger paycheck.

It made for a nice story filled with vindication and a moral at the end. Sheridan realized it too, as he then used his stowed-away talent with a vengeance in the years that followed. After the success ofSicario, a force had been unleashed within Sheridan as he worked nearly non-stop to make up for the years that were lost.
