Amidst growing concerns over AI,Psycho-Pass, the 2012 original anime series has become relevant once again. Set in 2112, the series portrays a world that is run by an automated law enforcement organization called the Sibyl System. The anime holds a central question about whether it is possible for an algorithm to understand the complexities of the human mind.

Psycho-Pass‘ dystopian setting is nothing new in terms of concept. But the world ofPsycho-Passprovides an ultimate power to the Sibyl System, that is the system decides whether a human gets to live freely, under observation, or deserves to be killed.
Psycho-Passis more relevant than ever in today’s world
InPsycho-Pass, the Sibyl System can calculate the propensity of a person to conduct crimes. Its primary purpose is to be a vigilante over the entirety of the populace by recognizing brain wave patterns. This analysis determines one’s crime coefficient. All of this data is analyzed and processed to produce Psycho-Pass. Anyone who displays a higher-than-average Psycho-pass is immediately apprehended or executed.
The Possible Sequel to ‘Psycho-Pass’ Would Be Infinitely Darker If Director Naoyoshi Shiotani’s Ideas Come to Life
In fact, the job of the Sibyl system does not end here, as it also decides the best job for each person according to their scans. The system picks politicians, removing democracy completely. Initially, Japan is shown to have become the perfect societal masterpiece due to Sibyl. However, due to its omnipresence, the system has taken away free will from society.
Thus, rather than man ruling over machines, it is a world where machines rule over man. It mirrors the current society in whichhumans are becoming more and more reliant on AI, to the extent that many are leaving their jobs up to computerized systems and algorithms to figure out. Just as free will is being slowly taken away by algorithms in real life,Psycho-Passsimply shows the extremes that it can lead to.

The dystopian world ofPsycho-Passis too close to reality for comfort
The introduction of the Sibyl System inPsycho-Passwas in order to create a utopian country where everything is perfect. But while part of the resulting society can be called utopian from the external overview, its underbelly is actually dystopian. The world in the anime might seem perfect at first but it is actually rife with imperfections.
Sibyl relieves humans from their decision-making dilemmas and assumes the position of an all-knowing system. However, citizens live in constant fear as even a single malicious thought is enough to raise the Psycho-Pass of someone. Its intention might be to create a peaceful society but it creates an underlying layer of fear in people.

As AI is advancing with leaps and bounds, an impending judgment day awaits.Psycho-Passportrays that in a world ruled by algorithms, there will be no latent secrets and no free will.
ThePsycho-Passanime is available to watch on Prime Video, Crunchyroll, and Hulu.
