Today,Spider-Man 3is remembered as a by-product of one of the greatest memes in pop culture history whereas for one of its leading stars, Topher Grace, the film is one of the greatest Spider-Man movies ever made. Sam Raimi’s final entry in his iconic trilogy did not stand the test of time but the same sentiment does not echo with the film’s leading antagonist.

Spider-Man 3made Topher Grace stand out, becoming his first big movie role where he was offered a leading part as much as the firstSpider-Manelevated Tobey Maguire in the industry. But Grace’s popularity was never able to rival that of Maguire’s and ultimately, the actor’s rendition of Venom was bulldozed by Tom Hardy’s beloved trilogy.

Even so, Topher Grace has no regrets for one of his career’s worst movie roles.

Topher Grace’s complicated relationship with Venom

For an actor, making it big in Hollywood is the only dream that matters. For some actors (like Taylor Sheridan), the decades roll by without their efforts bearing any actual fruit and they are forced to rethink their choices. For others – likeTopher Grace, life throws them a curveball by hoisting them up from a perfectly good show to a movie that is famously redacted from CBM history.

However, Grace’s relationship with his role inSpider-Man 3is one worth applauding. The actor, despite the negative chatter that surrounded the threequel since its premiere, has never failed to express his love for Venom. This unrequited love can be attributed to his childhood dream coming true.

In an interview withCinemaBlend, Grace revealed that Todd McFarlane’s famously dark rendition of the wall-crawler and his antithesis was what made him fall in love with the character as a kid. As such, finding the opportunity to play Venom as an adult was nothing short of an unbelievable stroke of luck.

Unfortunately for the actor, his love for Venom was not strong enough to pullSpider-Man 3out of its misery in the future. Despite the movie pulling in strong numbers at the box office during its premiere,Sam Raimi‘s finale was crucified by the critics and the audience alike in the years to come.

Topher Grace never wanted to leaveThat ’70s Show

Topher Grace tasted his first notes of success onThat ’70s Show, the dysfunctional American sitcom that never fails to make its audience laugh to this day. The show was such an incredible experience that even after landing the gig of being the main baddie in a Spider-Man film, Grace wanted to continue starring in the sitcom alongside working on the 2007 Raimi film.

Eventually, the idea didn’t pan out in his favor as Grace left the show in its final season. Despite returning for a worthy finale with Laura Prepon’s Donna,That ’70s Showlanguished after his absence, proving just how integral and crucial Grace was to the sitcom’s success and its cast’s on-set synergy. In return, Grace has little to show for himself but a failed movie adventure that bears abold red mark in Sony’s CBM history.

In an interview withMTV, theOcean’s Elevenactor revealed how he remained humble through the entire experience despite being in the spotlight for so long:

There are lots of shows where people can’t wait to get off the show that basically made them. I can speak for all six kids [on the show] in saying that we have no visions of greatness for ourselves. We love doing the show. It’s really good. The writing is really strong. So it’s not a matter of trying to juggle. We just figure out a way.

Spider-Man 3now holds a rating of 63% onRotten Tomatoes, bearing the brunt ofTobey Maguire‘s third, but not final, outing as the webslinger and his wild dance routine born from it. Meanwhile, Topher Grace and his fellowThat ’70s Showcastmates have gone on to find fame and success in Hollywood as well.
