Attack on Titanhas solidified its presence as a critically and commercially acclaimed anime-manga series. Hajime Isayama’s manga was thoroughly entertaining and engaging, while also pushing fans to think about the deeper implications of the themes presented to them.

The anime didn’t disappoint as it conveyed the thrill of Isayama’s layered narrative with utmost conviction, sometimes even accentuating it in the process. However, the studio switch of the anime wasn’t initially received well by fans. They were concerned with the decision and criticized the animation style of Studio MAPPA.

The good part is that fans warmed up to MAPPA’s animation after a while, but the sad part is that MAPPA doesn’t get credit for switching things up to match the standards set by Studio Wit. Yuichiro Hayashi, the director of the series, and Yusuke Tannawa, the CGI producer, discussed their process during an interview and it highlights what MAPPA did right withAttack on Titan.

Here’s how MAPPA switched things inAttack on Titan

The studio switch inAttack on Titanallowed fans to experience their favorite series in two different animation styles. Both of these brought out a different side ofHajime Isayama‘s manga. Similar to how fans were always comparing MAPPA’s work on the series with Studio Wit, the team behind the anime was no different.

Yusuke Tannawa and Yuichiro Hayashi discussed their approach with the final seasons of the animeduring an interview. They went through the seasons done by Studio Wit, while trying to understand whatAttack on Titanwas all about. Tannawa said:

A still from the Rumbling in Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan

Of course, we watched it and studied it a lot, but we can’t do the same exact thing, and when we finished Part 1, we got an idea of what we could do with Attack on Titan.

With this statement, it’s safe to assume that the team behind the anime were trying to figure out a different approach from Studio Wit, while trying to learn from their own mistakes with part 1. And seemingly, they succeeded in doing both as fans have come to appreciate MAPPA’s animation style and the more grave appearance of the scenes. However, the best aspect of MAPPA’s animation style was the CGI.

The CGI expertise of MAPPA was praiseworthy

In addition to strategizing while being mindful of the criticism received by part 1, MAPPA tried different variations of what they were already doing rather than completely changing their approach. Tannawa mentioned how the 3D animation used for fight sequences between the Titans and during the rumbling was improved over time. Those working on the parts grew more accustomed to their work and it showed in the anime.

While Wit Studio’s use of 3D animation was limited to angles and fight sequences, MAPPA primarily used 3D anime for the Titans. Their extensive use of it was initially jarring at times, but the improvement was evident andthey hit it out of the park withAttack on Titan: The Final Chapters.
