The teaser of James Gunn and David Corenswet’sSuperman(2025) was dropped a couple of weeks ago and let’s just say the doubts DC fans had about this new era vanished like a villain under Superman’s heat vision. Currently, the teaser has a whopping 1.1 million likes to its name. Needless to say, James Gunn came, he saw, he conquered. Now all we need to do is wait for July of this year before we can pass any solid judgments about the upcoming film.

Obviously, some social media critics have reacted negatively to the new Superman. From the teaser to David Corenswet’s suit, a lot of nitpicking has been going around on the Internet. One fan “pointed out” how the suit looked similar to that of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord inGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.Excuse me? That really makes no sense!
Is David Corenswet’s Superman suit similar to Star-Lord’s?
What do Star-Lord and Superman have in common? Not their suits, that’s for sure! A user who goes by the username @blurayangel on X posted a tweet comparing the superhero suits of bothChris PrattandDavid Corenswetand mentioned how, in their opinion, the latter’s costume looked like a“repurposed Star-Lord suit from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

Unfortunately for the user, his replies were filled with people absolutely disagreeing with his hot take. One commented,“I can’t see it where exactly do you see it?”

However, one went out of their way to prove just how wrong the OP is. @rags751 posted a photo of Corenswet’s suit and pointed out the different comic books it was inspired by. FromThe New 52collar toKingdom Come’s logo, the user stated thatJames Gunnwas simply“showing respect to the other suits in this suit.”
Well technically if you did your research there is details on the suit which says it’s an amalgamation of all the different designs appearing in one suit. So@JamesGunnis showing respect to the other suits in this suit.#SupermanMovie#Superman.pic.twitter.com/NAfP7KsieD

Another user, @EliTVScreen, noted the hypocrisy in the OP’s point of view. They posted a screenshot of an earlier tweet @blurayangel made praising Corenswet’s suit.
This was you though, always tryna play both sides for engagement, huh?pic.twitter.com/5cQuDNMqcs

While we love a good DCU vs MCU debate as much as the next person, this particular comparison seems like a reach. Instead of comparing threads and lines, let’s take a moment to appreciate the designers who came together to build a suit that is a love letter to the legacy of Superman.
James Gunn talks about his Superman’s suit
Gunn and Corenswet made headlines when the world found out that their Superman would be bringing the iconic red trunks back. While comic book enthusiasts were ecstatic, others believed that this would make the Kryptonian look rather unserious. However, that was the point at the end of the day.
While on the set ofSuperman,Gunn spoke to the press (viaGizmodo) about the decision and admitted that he was“on the no trunks team”before his leading actor managed to change his mind.

During costume trials, they tried both options – trunks and no trunks. It was Corenswet who stated that Superman would want kids to not be afraid of him. So, to counter the fact that he is a literal alien and shoots lasers from his eyes, a pair of bright red trunks was necessary.
Gunn stated,
…One of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers. He shoots beams out of his eyes…He’s incredibly powerful and could be considered scary. He wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that hope and shows that positivity. And that really clicked in for me.
He also admitted that trying to make Superman look serious was rather“silly.”Why? Because he is a superhero who gives out vibes of positivity and hope. In Gunn’s words,“He’s the first one, brightly colored and that’s who he is.”No point in taking the brightness out of Superman; he is the literal personification of the word!
Supermanwill be released in theatres on June 07, 2025.
