MinecraftDirector Wants to Avoid Past Mistakes of Video Game Adaptations
A live-action adaptation of the popularMinecraftvideo game is now in development, and Jason Momoa and Jack Black are set to lead the film. The director of the film, Jared Hess, recently talked about his approach to the material and his intention to please the core fans of the game.
In an interview with theSalt Lake Tribune, Hess talked about avoiding past mistakes of videogame adaptations and specifically pointed out the infamous first design forSonic the Hedgehog. He claims that he does not want to disappoint young gamers by making an underwhelming film. He said,

“I think anybody that does any IP, they just want to avoid an ugly Sonic situation. I just can’t disappoint the 10-year-olds, or they’re going to murder us.”
The first designs of theSonicmovie received backlash because it looked too real and weird for an animated film. This seems to be one of the learning curves for the makers ofMinecraft,and it remains to be seen how Hess’ adaptation fares with other existing game adaptations.

Danielle Brooks, who is currently receiving laurels and nominations at various award events for her role inThe Color Purple, is gearing up for her role in theMinecraftfilm. She will be starring alongside Jason Momoa and Jack Black in the much-anticipated film.
On the red carpet for the Critics Choice Awards, Brooks talked toDeadlineabout her upcoming projects, includingPeacemakerseason 2 andMinecraft. Brooks revealed that she is incredibly excited to work with Momoa and Black in the film while also expressing her happiness about the continuing relationship with Warner Bros. He said,

“I’m so excited about working on Minecraft. I just met Jack Black at the Golden Globes and we took a picture together. That was really cool. And working with Jason Momoa, I’m really excited about this project and staying in the Warner Bros. family.”

Directed by Jared Hess, the film is expected to start shooting sometime this year. The film is set to release on July 03, 2025.
