In order to maintain her appearance, she would go on days without eating and was also given amphetamines to keep her energy in check. She also took barbiturates to help her sleep and developed an addiction to the same. In 1969 it was because of this medication that she passed away at the age of 47due to a self-overdose.

On a more personal front, the actress was married five times, and after her death, her ex-husband made a shocking revelation in his memoir released posthumously in 2017 (he passed away in 2005). Sidney Luft was the third husband and well as Garland’s manager from 1952 to 1965.

In his memoir, he claimed that the actors who played the Munchkins inThe Wizard of Ozabused the actress on set. In this movie, the actress played the role of Dorothy Gale and was just 16 years of age. Luft revealed in his book viaPeople. He added:
They would make Judy’s life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress … The men were 40 or more years old. They thought they could get away with anything because they were so small.

Even the actress detailed in aninterviewin 1967 and added“They were drunks…they got smashed every night. “This revelation added another chapter to Garland’s already tragic life. Throughout her career the actress battled several mental health issues and health struggles, showcasing the other side of fame that many don’t talk about.
