Sofia Vergara has solidified herself as one of the highest-paying actresses in the Hollywood industry thanks to her acting talent. While many know her as Gloria ofModern Family, the Colombian-American actress has continued to make an impressive portfolio with her modeling and acting career. Given the dedication she puts into her career, it would come as a surprise for many that acting was not what she initially planned to move forward with.

She once recalled her initial days when she was offered a modeling gig at the time when she was terrified of wearing a bikini due to her school nuns.

In a 2017 interview withCBS News‘ Lee Cowan,the 51-year-old actress talked about how she got introduced to the entertainment world. Back when she was 17 years old, a casting agent offered her a modeling gig at the beach to work in a PEPSI commercial.
“Yeah, I was with my family, like, at the beach and some casting agent saw me and said, ‘We’re doing this commercial, do you want to do it?’ And my mom is like, ‘Yes, yes, she wants to do it.'”
While her mother quickly gave a positive response,Sofia Vergaracouldn’t help but feel terrified by the idea.
“And I’m like, ‘No, the nuns are gonna kill me, I can’t be in a bathing suit on a commercial!'”
Cowan was surprised about her reason for hesitating for the gig due to her school nuns, she added,
“Yeah. They’re not gonna let me do it. They’re gonna throw me out of school!”
Back then, she was a senior at a strict Catholic High School in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia. However, the commercial came out after she graduated from the school. This marked her kickstart in the entertainment world however she never considered choosing the entertainment world as she was dead set on becoming a dentist.
Entertainment World Was Not Something Sofia Vergara Initially Wanted!

During an appearance on theHarry Connick Jr.‘s show, Vergara talked about planning to become a doctor but chose to go with a dentist long before pursuing a serious career in the entertainment world.
She revealed,
“I wanted to be a doctor but 4 years ago in Colombia that wasn’t an option because you were thinking about getting married, having kids, and being a doctor takes so much time and years of studying. It’s difficult.”
Thus, she decided to make a career in dentistry however, that too was something wasn’t able to complete.
“The next best thing at that time for me was to be a dentist. So I went to dental school. But I didn’t finish.”
She attended dental school for two years but dropped out to become a TV host as she toldPEOPLEin a 2009 interview. Life surely had different plans for her as she went on to gain immense name and fame as an actress, TV host, businesswoman, and numerous endorsement deals.
