TheMatrix Onlineis a massive multiplayer online role-playing game that was created by Monolith Productions. The video game was developed for the continuation of the storyline of the Matrix movies.

TheMatrix Onlinebegan closed beta-testing in June 2004 and it was officially launched in 2005. However, the game was shut down in 2009 due to a very low player base.
What IsThe Matrix OnlineStory?
The story ofMatrix Onlinebegins with the player who assumes the role of a Redpill. While creating a new character, the player is given the choice of taking the blue pill (quit the game) or the red pill (continue the game). After the tutorial, the player is free to roam around the Mega City.
The storyline has several events and new characters added to the story. The major ones have been outlined below:
The first major event to occur inThe Matrix Onlinestory is the “race” between three organizations to gather Neo’s RSI fragments. The organization that collects the most in a week receives a defense bonus. In the end, different organizations won on different servers.
The second major event takes place a week later with the appearance of Agents with glowing red eyes. These Agents appear mysteriously and start attacking all humans, including those allied with the Machines. While none of the three factions claimed to be controlling the Red-eyed Agents, some believe they serve a new fourth organization. These agents basically attack anyone with an RSI code fragment (“contraband fragments”) or anyone attempting to defend them.
But the most important part ofThe Matrix Onlinestory is the death of Morpheus!
Morpheus Died In the Matrix Online Story
You should know that everything that occurred in that game is canon. And canonically, Morpheus is dead already — which could explain why we didn’t see Laurence Fishburne return as older Morpheus inMatrix Resurrections. Instead, we saw a younger Morpheus in the trailer which arrived today.
InMatrix MMO, Morpheus’s death was part of an in-game event where the character was setting bombs to reveal the matrix code to civilians. After six days of being hunted by every faction in the game, Morpheus gets killed in an alleyway by a former garbage processing program that had turned into an evil bug man. Will Matrix 4 Resurrections follow the storyline of The Matrix Online?
Quite frankly, it is hard to answer this question right now as the plot ofMatrix 4has been well hidden under the wraps. But given that the video game and its events have now all faded from memory, it would be a hassle for the viewers to go back and read the lore just to understand the newMatrixmovie.
So there are high chances thatMatrix Resurrectionsmay not follow all the events that happened inThe Matrix Onlinestory. But it might pick up a few concepts from there.
