At yesterday’s Nintendo Direct show where a bunch of Switch games were revealed, Nintendo ended the show with an announcement of the Nintendo Today app for mobile, which Nintendo promises will deliver exclusive news to gamers.
It looks like Nintendo wasn’t kidding. The release date forthe Legend of Zelda moviewas revealed today by the Nintendo Today app.

The Legend of Zelda Movie Is Two Years Away
According to the Nintendo Today app, the Legend of Zelda movie will be released worldwide on July 16, 2025. Unfortunately, other than that, there’s no other information given.
Funnily enough, Nintendo and Sony Pictures are collaborating on the Legend of Zelda movie. Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) will direct it, and Avi Arad and Nintendo gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto will produce.
The Legend of Zelda movie is the second movie based on a Nintendo franchise after the Super Mario Bros. Movie released in theaters in 2023, and earned a whopping $1.3 billion after its theatrical run on a $100 million budget. Needless to say, you can see why Nintendo is pushing this Zelda movie in the fast track.
If the planned schedules don’t get delayed, Nintendo has theSuper Mario Bros. Movie sequel set for release in April of 2026, and a The Legend of Zelda movie releasing a year after. If the Zelda movie does as well as the Mario one, don’t be surprised to see Nintendo give its other properties the film treatment.

Of course, the big news for Nintendo is happening next week on April 2, as a Nintendo Direct dedicated to the Switch 2 is set to air. We’re expecting the console’s release date, price, launch games and tech specs to be revealed. Yesterday’s event didn’t feature any official Switch 2 news, but info from the Virtual Game Cards announcement did mention “Switch 2 Edition” gamesin the legal fine print.
