However, it seems like the long-awaited PC version of The Last of Us Part 1 has launched in a messy state. A couple of hours after its launch on Steam, The Last of Us Part 1 has received more than 2000 negative reviews, with players complaining that the game is unplayable because of freezing errors and constant crashes.
Those who tried to experience the remastered version of 2013 survival horror on Steam Deck also encountered similar issues. Players who have tried to run the game on Valve’s handheld claim that the shader installation itself takes nearly an hour, and when the process is finally complete, the game runs under 30 FPS and is far from offering a stable experience. The Steam Deck generally manages to run even the most demanding AAA games, so long as they’re Steam Deck certified and players are willing to make some tweaks and sacrifices.
It’s worth noting thatIron Galaxyis behind the development of The Last of Us Part 1 for PC. Unfortunately, the studio is perhaps best known for itsBatman: Arkham KnightPC port from 2015, which launched with a myriad of performance issues. More recently, Iron Galaxy also portedUncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which was plagued with problematic camera controls that the studio struggled to remedy with a series of updates.
Since Sony began porting its first-party titles to PC, it has partnered with multiple studios and even acquired porting specialistNixxes Softwareto help bring big-budget first-party experiences to PC. With rumors suggesting Nixxes is preoccupied with the PC port ofRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Iron Galaxy was brought in to handle porting The Last of Us Part 1, which has resulted in a disastrous launch for the title on Steam.
Hopefully, with future updates, Joel and Ellie’s adventure will run as intended. Until then, it might be smart to avoid this one for a while, orplay the PS5 version.
