TheCriminal MindsSeason 5 episode where George Foyet, aka the Reaperkills Hotch’s ex-wife Haley is a gut-punch fans will never forget. Known as100, this intense chapter yet again showed the show’s ability to dive into the darkest corners of human behavior.

Since its 2005 debut, the show has excelled at exploring the darkness within killers and the toll on those chasing them. Haley’s death hit hard, cementing the Reaper as one of the series’ most infamous villains, though some viewers couldn’t help but feel that his near-invincible plot armor made him less terrifying and more frustrating.
Everything Wrong withCriminal Minds‘ 100th Episode
In Season 5, Episode 9 ofCriminal Minds, things gotrealdark when George Foyet, or best known as the terrifying Reaper broke into Hotch’s life in the worst way imaginable. While the episode is deeply emotional, some of the plot choices raise eyebrows.
The episode begins with Foyet taunting Hotch by sending him a recording of Haley and their son, Jack, as he manipulates Haley into believing she’s being placed in witness protection. Disguised as a U.S. Marshal, Foyet tricks Haley into revealing her location. Meanwhile, the BAU is racing against time to locate them.

Hotch arrives at the house moments before Haley is murdered, forced to listen over the phone as Foyet shoots her. In the aftermath, Hotch engages in a brutal fight with Foyet, ultimately beating him to death. He then finds his son Jack, who had followed his father’s earlier instructions to hide.
Now coming to the things that annoyed the fans, Foyet escaping custody? That was for sure a bit of a stretch. Then there’s Haley, who somehow never saw Foyet’s face on the news and didn’t think to call Hotch, even though she was heading into“witness protection”based on one phone call.

Yes, Foyet told her not to call anyone, but really? Her ex-husband is in FBI. You’d think she’d at least try. Here is what the fans have to say about the episode,
Despite these complaints, the episode went on to become one of the highest-rated in the entire series at 9.2 on IMDb, and fans still love it with all it’s flaws!

Aspects That Made the 100th Episode ofCriminal MindsGreat!
What made this episode great wasThomas Gibson’sstunning performance, which took the emotional weight of the episode to another level. Alone in the car, Hotch hears every cruel word from George Foyet, knowing he’s powerless to stop what’s happening.

The raw emotion Gibson conveys in these scenes, as Hotch struggles to maintain control while facing the unimaginable, makes it one of the most intense and heart-wrenching moments in the series.
The scene is particularly more interesting because it’s almost entirely carried by Gibson’s reactions, his face, his body language, his voice breaking under the pressure. Hotch, a character known for his calm and calculated demeanor, is pushed to the brink, and Gibson masterfully portrays the internal battle between professional detachment and personal devastation.

The way he portrays Hotch’s terror and helplessness while still trying to be strong for his son makes this episode unforgettable, leaving viewers deeply moved by his performance.
