Jan de Bont’sSpeedwas a massive blockbuster success for 20th Century Studios, and more than that, it made Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock international stars. With the fame and money that the franchise made, it’s only logical to expect a sequel. Unfortunately, theJohn Wickstar opted out of it.

Without Reeves,Speed 2: Cruise Controltanked at the box office, but it was more of a deficiency in the script. This is why the actor did not return—he wasn’t feeling it, in plain speak. Now, he’s got a new project that almost feels like it is set in the same atmosphere asSpeed.
Keanu Reeves was disappointed withSpeed 2script
Keanu Reevesmade a lot of money in 1994’sSpeedplaying Jack Traven, a police officer who tried to avoid a bomb from exploding by keeping a bus running at a speed above 50 miles per hour. The film received critical acclaim, even winning an Oscar for Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing. It also put the actor’s name on the Hollywood map, establishing him as a rising action star.
Taking a Closer Look at Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves’ Friendship Over the Years
When asked why he decided not to star in the sequel, he shared viaThe Graham Norton Show:
At the time, I didn’t respond to the script. I really wanted to work with Sandra Bullock, I loved playing Jack Traven, and I loved Speed, but an ocean liner? I had nothing against the artists involved, but at that time, I had the feeling it just wasn’t right.

Reeves reasoned that he didn’t want to appear in the same genre after performing consecutively in action movies. He later starred in 1997’sThe Devil’s Advocateinstead, asupernatural horror film.
Years later, the action genre became his trademark following the wild success of theJohn Wickfranchise. Taking a break from stabbing evil guys with a pencil, Reeves will now star in Swedish filmmakerRuben Östlund’s upcoming filmThe Entertainment System Is Down.

The premise is a social satire exploring people’s addiction to media devices during long-haul flights. The passengers will be forced to face the horrors of boredom, as well as the anticipation of rage and chaos that will happen inside an aircraft. Sounds likeSpeedall over again, but in a plane!
Keanu Reeves’ new project will use a real airplane
Filming forThe Entertainment System Is Downhas begun, and principal photography is underway in Budapest. According to the director, they will be using a real Boeing 747 on the set. “We wanted to have a real airplane because very often, when you watch an airplane movie, characters are put in a corner, pretending to be on a big flight, but we don’t really see it,” he said at a Cannes press conference viaVariety.
Keanu Reeves’ New Look in Ballerina Doesn’t Mean He Survived the Duel at the End of John Wick: Chapter 4
This is an exciting journey for Reeves as he tries to explore more projects outside theJohn Wickfranchise. Even though we won’t get anotherSpeedmovie, this upcoming film somehow makes up for it!
The Entertainment System Is Downis expected to premiere in 2026.
