It is ironic that while Marvel is gradually expanding its cinematic universe, online trolls are acting as though this is a bad thing.Actress Devery Jacobs has a succinct response to the deeply offensive and incredibly stupid question of whether or not the two most recent Disney+ series from Marvel Studios,EchoandWhat If…?Season 2, needed to delve deeper into the lives of Native American characters.

Jacobs recently made an appearance in two TV series:Echo, in which she donned the role of Bonnie, andWhat If…?(Season 2), in which she voiced Kahhori. The Hollywood Reporter recently questioned her about online remarks made following Kahhori’s big moment in the second season of Marvel’s animated series, which implied thatEchowas not really needed—a ridiculous claim to make given that the show had been developing for years.
Her initial response only made sense.

Devery Jacobs Responds to Online Trolls Who Hate Diversity
After the introduction of Kahhori, a Native American, inWhat If…?, some viral comments questioned the necessity of releasingEcho, the first live-action Native American lead character in the MCU.
It was said in the viral comments that having both of the indigenous characters would be“repetitive”,even though the MCU is terribly lacking in diversity and their backgrounds differ.Attending theEchopremiere in Los Angeles,Devery Jacobs, the Native American voice actor behind Kahhori inWhat If…?and playing Bonnie inEcho, responded with a smile to those who were critical of the shows. Talking toThe Hollywood Reporter, she posed the question:

“Would somebody go up to a white guy and say, ‘This is the one perspective for a white story that is out there’? Would somebody go and say that? That’s egregious, that’s insane that anybody would say that.”
More diverse stories and characters should be given the opportunity to flourish in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after 33 films and a few TV series, the majority of which starred and/or featured white actors.

Devery Jacobs: Kahhori’s Story Is ‘Astronomically Different’ FromEcho’s Maya Lopez
Devery Jacobs claimed that there are significant differences between Maya Lopez’s story inEchoand Kahhori’s story inWhat If…?The former’s narrative centers on Mohawk cultures and communities and discusses colonization and history. On the other hand, Willie ‘Crazy Horse’ Lincoln, the friend of Wilson Fisk (better known as Kingpin) in the comics, is the father of Maya Lopez, better known as Echo. Maya’s photographic reflexes have made her a skilled fighter and artist.
All of this online chatter is absurd considering how completely absent (or at best, limited) representation has historically been in Hollywood blockbuster productions, a fact that also impacted Marvel Studios’ projects until recently. Nevertheless, Jacobs provided a more thoughtful and clarifying response in addition to her entirely justified response:

“I think that the story of Kahhori in What If…? is astronomically different from that of Maya Lopez in Echo… I think one is talking about colonization and history and features Mohawk cultures and communities — the community that I come from — and the other is about an anti-hero, kind of a villain, who is coming back to her Choctaw Nation and to her family, and it’s really a dark crime noir family drama… And so, they’re both individual stories that absolutely deserve to be told.”
