In pastThe Legend of Zeldatitles, Link had a penchant for destroying every pot in sight through a sword attack or by throwing. While there are significantly fewer pots inTears of the Kingdomand its predecessor, there are still plenty of items to throw around the kingdom.

Link’s ability to throw may seem like a disposable mechanic, but it’s actually a great technique to free up space in your inventory during battles and an invaluable way to save arrows. Here’s how to throw an item in Tears of the Kingdom.
How To Pick Up & Throw Items
The game actually supplies a tutorial on how to throw an item within the Yamiyo Shrine, located east of the Hyrule Castle Town Ruins, but it’s fairly common to miss this during initial gameplay. Firstly, if you wish to pick up an item off the ground in order to throw it, such as a rock and absolutelynot a Korok, then you simply stand in front of the item andpress the prompted A button.
Link will then be holding the item, and you may thenhold down and release the R shoulder buttonallowing Link to throw the item in front of him. This technique is particularly useful when battling Bokoblins when there are nearby items to throw. It’s also a surefire way to defeat the mini Stone Taluses. You will also need to pick up suspicious-looking stones that are usually hiding Koroks under them, but it is frowned upon to throw the stones back on top of them.

Throwing From Your Inventory
If you wish to throw an item from your inventory instead of picking it up off the ground, then you simply repeat the same step by holding in theR shoulder buttonfor Link to take up his throwing stance.
While holding in the R button, press up on your D-padwhich will open your inventory, and scroll to the item you want to throw until it is in Link’s hand. Once Link is holding the item, release the R shoulder buttonand the item will be launched in front of you. This is another surefire way to get the upper hand in battle by throwing items like Fire Fruits at enemies.

How To Customize Button Mapping
If the R shoulder button is awkward for your gameplay style, then you can always change which buttons correspond with the action through Button Mapping. Simply head to the Settings menu, represented by the gear icon, on your Nintendo Switch and look for theControllers and Sensorssub-menu. Then clickChange Button Mappingand this menu will allow you to assign any button you wish to the throwing action so that it feels more natural for you in the game.
What Items Can You Throw?
There are a host of items you can throw in Tears of the Kingdom, whether they are dotting the Hyrule map or nestled away in your inventory.Bomb Flower,Fire Fruit,Shock Fruit,Dazzlefruit, and theBoomerangcan all be launched at enemies to deal some serious damage - just make sure you’re standing far away enough before throwing. Similarly,Puffshroomcan create a smoke grenade instead of an explosion.
If you throw aHylian Pine Coneinto a fire, you’ll be given an extra boost of airflow should you need to travel upwardswith the Paraglider. Even though Chuchu Jelly looks like it can slide between your fingers, Link can actually throw the jelly substance to freeze or shock incoming enemies. Muddle Buds are particularly useful to throw when you’re navigating The Depths, as they will soon pit enemies against their kin instead of you.

Lastly, you are also able to throw any weapons, particularly if they are about to break in battle, and launching them at your enemy’s head before they expire may be a more satisfying end to their longevity instead of watching them crumble.

Throwing Brightbloom Seeds
Perhaps the most advantageous use of throwing an item is using this mechanic to place Brightbloom Seedsin The Depths. Players often attach Brightbloom Seeds to their arrows and fire them into the abyss to light a path, but learning how to efficiently throw Brightbloom Seeds may save you a bunch of arrows.
Throwing a Brightbloom Seed will not project the item as far as an arrow (attempt to aim higher to get a decent range) but it’s good to be mindful of your arrow depletion and assess the range of light you’d like to achieve before subconsciously wasting one of your arrows.
