Chainsaw Manhas a unique sense of humor and intense violence, but it became notorious for its gruesome depiction of sexual abuse, particularly the tragic treatment of Denji. The portrayal of his constant abuse at the hands of Makima and others and the trauma it has caused Denji has left a bad taste. AsChainsaw Man Part 2begins, fans have become increasingly more concerned and open about their discomfort with Tatsuki Fujimoto’s use of s*xual abuse, thinking this must be shock value, a means to sensationalize or create controversy.

The response might be coming from the good of their hearts and concern for the teenage boy. Denji, a naive young boy who doesn’t know his way around the world, has been taken advantage of too often. At some point, it’s disheartening to see it on and on without thinking it must be for shock value. However, forChainsaw Manfans claiming the need for media literacy, Fujimoto’s point about the abuse inChainsaw Manis the complete opposite of sensationalization.
Denji’s Trauma Is Central to His Character Arc
To fully understand the journey and nuances of Denji’s character, the sxual abuse he faces might be the cruel truth Tatsuki Fujimoto has to make us see. While a trigger warning would’ve been appreciated, Denji’s treatment shows how deeply exploited the teenage boy is. It becomes a cycle of violence that he can’t seem to get out of, starting from what happened with Makima. Even beyond sxual violence, Denji is exploited by the yakuza, by the government, and even by his fellow Devil Hunters. He is manipulated at every turn when all he seeks is validation and love.
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Approach Towards Chainsaw Man Part 2 Almost Guaranteed that it Would Never be Able to Surpass the First Part
Chainsaw Manfans and the anime community, in general, have gotten rather fed up with the depiction of s*xual violence in the series without having any real response from Denji. Some have reduced it to shock value without realizing the teenager was only 16 at the start of the story and is now 18.
It’s almost like sexual abuse is a running theme… almosthttps://t.co/u15o9FbG8h

Or maybe, just maybe, hes exploring the sexual side of denji and making him realize why being overly reliant on sex is a bad thing?Calling it shock value means the whole point of him doing this is to piss readers off and that blatantly isnt true.
While we don’t know whether Denji will ever come to realize his history of s*xual abuse, Tatsuki Fujimoto isn’t entirely using it to create controversy, but as a central plot point to his exploitation. The fact that Denji hasn’t realized it yet doesn’t mean he is any less of a victim. His unhealthy relationships aren’t something he asked for.

Chainsaw Man:A Commentary on Power and Control
The key themes that Fujimoto explores through the cruel plot ofChainsaw Manare the dehumanization and objectification of the vulnerable. Denji’s status as a Devil Hunter and later, as Chainsaw Man himself, marks him as both a valuable tool and a disposable pawn tothose in power, as seen with Makima.
After Chainsaw Man Part 2 Ends, Tatsuki Fujimoto Already Has the Most Absurd Idea for a Romantic Horror Manga
The teenager’s naive outlook regarding s*x and relationships is consistently preyed upon by those who seek to use him for their own benefit without a second thought about his psyche. So to say the abuse is shock value diminishes Denji’s character and misses the point. But understandably, fans do have their limits on how much they can see it.
Chainsaw Manis available on Crunchyroll.
