Sweeney reportedly first came across the script for the film when she auditioned for it way before her fame. Though the project did not take off, the script of the film reportedly kept spinning her head, and when she got the chance to produce her own film, she decided to contact the screenwriter. While there were some changes from the original script, Sweeney mentioned that her performance in one particular scene in the film was the result of her reaction to a real-life incident.

The body horror film examines the control the world seeks over a woman’s body and director Michael Mohan reportedly was inspired byRosemary’s Babyand his own experiences with catholicism.

Sweeney mentioned that though screenwriter Andrew Lobel’s script was amazing, she and the director decided to change the ending to be a more harrowing and dark scene that sees the character experience utmost pain, all captured in a long take. Mohan reportedly pitched the scene to Sweeney knowing that she would be up for it and said that he wanted to make an unforgettable horror film.

According to GQ, the actress’ stills from the show were shared on social media, with her cousins being tagged on the videos, making her feel violated. Sweeney then reportedly used this feeling to bring out her harrowing and painful performance in the final scene ofImmaculate. She said to GQ,

I think that is what speaks volumes. Yes, you can have a horror film where things are gory and jump out at you, but one of the things that’s the scariest in Immaculate is real life.”

The actress’ performance has been received positively by critics and the film is set to be released on March 22.
