At times, the latest Disney+ streaming series money grab,Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, feels like a grand family adventure. The story is fun, the special effects are spectacular, and the series doesn’t take itself too seriously. Of course, it helps that Jude Law revels in the lead role and proves he can be both a protagonist and an antagonist, AKA the “anti-hero.”

On the other hand, the series is so invested in marketing toward children that it almost doesn’t seem like it belongs in the world ofThe Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett,orAhsoka. This removes the stakes because we know Disney won’t kill off any child in the main cast.
However, whatStar Wars: Skeleton Crewhas that others don’t is a considerable amount of heart.

The Acolyte Season 1 Episode 6 Recap and Spoiler Review — What Does Osha Put on Her Head?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’sReview and Synopsis
The story follows a young boy, Wim (Encanto’sRavi Cabot-Conyers), who has struggled since losing his mother. His father, Wendle (Tunde Adebimpe), works so much that he doesn’t have time to read him a bedtime story. Wim’s best friend, Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), is an alien youngling who looks like the following plush toy you will buy for your little one this holiday.
One day, late for a test, Wim tries to take a shortcut but stumbles, quite literally, into what he thinks is a lost Jedi Temple. Of course, his father doesn’t believe him. Two of Wim’s classmates, Fern (Firestarter’sRyan Kiera Armstrong, giving her best Han Solo impression) and KB (Kyriana Kratter), overhears the conversation and wants in.

The young cast has a lot of fun, including Smith’s Neel, whose adorable miniature Snuffleupagus-like character stands out. Not to mention, Armstrong’s Fern is a strong, breakout young adolescent female character who has excellent antagonistic chemistry with almost everyone around her.

Star Wars: Skeleton CrewHas Excitement and Heart!
How doesJude Lawfit in? He doesn’t make an appearance until the end of the second episode. (Though, if I had to guess, he is most likely to lead a siege in the pilot’s exciting opening sequence.) He plays Jod Na Nawood, who isn’t called a Jedi but a “Force-user”—a pirate with considerable charm and skills, making him an infamous figure across the galaxy.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crewhas quite the pedigree behind it, with showrunners Jon Watts (Spider-Manfranchise) and Christopher Ford (Thanksgiving), and some eye-popping directors like David Lowery (reteaming with Jude Law, directing thePeter Pan and Wendyteam in episodes two and three), Bryce Dallas Howard, and Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters).

The team involves offering instant credibility. The story is basically a treasure-hunting adventure with traits similar to those of theGoonies, in a way. When you see where the story is heading at the end of episode three, you see the absolute potential.

Is Disney+’sStar Wars: Skeleton Crew’sWorth Watching?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crewis worth watching, offering an alternative to its programming. Based on the three episodes provided to critics, it is safer, family-friendly fare than most. There is a considerable amount of action, though the dialogue, written mainly by Watts and Ford, struggles with how the young cast interacts on their own.
While Law excels, Nick Frost is a scene-stealer as a droid pirate, SM-33. He offers the perfect comic relief and edge that the show needs at times. The series provides some genuine, honest-to-god wonderment that can mesmerize the audience. Unfortunately, without seeing the entire series, it’s hard to know if the show will maintain and build upon its charms and promises.

Either way, sit back and enjoy the ride theStar Wars: Skeleton Crew has to offer.
