Spider-Man, being a significant face of the Marvel Comics, has given us some iconic storylines over the years. Many fans also consider him the unofficial mascot of the superhero company. But sadly, the character has been subjected to one of the worst comic book runs received by any superhero withThe Amazing Spider-Manseries.

Zeb Wells’The Amazing Spider-Manseries has been through immense criticism for its creative choices. Especially the approach taken to portray MJ’s love life was hated by most fans. As the preview of issue #56 has just been released, the readers openly admitted that the comic has hit a new low and is“pathetic”at best.
The Amazing Spider-Mancomic series has poorly handled the MJ-Peter relationship
Peter Parkerand Mary Jane Watson’s relationship is one of the highlights ofSpider-Man‘s story. Zeb Wells’ comic run made one of the biggest blunders when they split these characters again after the infamousOne More Daystory. As if it was not enough, they even paired her up with Paul Rabin, whom she met in an alternate reality, Earth-TRN1023.
Paul Rabin, first introduced inThe Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 6#1 is the son of Earth-TRN1023’s villainous Benjamin Rabin. Due to a time dilation between the alternate reality and Earth-616, MJ and Paul spent 4 years together until Peter brought them back. However, much to the dismay of the readers, Paul and MJ continued their relationship even after relocating to Earth-616.

Zeb Wells’ handling of MJ’s love life has made many fans believe that the writer has some kind of hatred for our beloved wall-crawler. Despite the fans knowing that Peter Parker has been deeply hurt by MJ’s relationship with Paul, the makers have repeatedly tried to prove that everything’s fine. But the preview of#56has broken all limits as it looks like another poor attempt to make us believe that Peter, MJ, and Paul are on very good terms.

The comic book panel that featured Peter, MJ, and Paul in the same place has been perceived by the fans as terribly awkward and painful to see. The tension between the trio is very prominent in the scene. Most of the fans have also admitted that it is the poor writing that brought so much hatred to Paul’s character.

The fans cannot withstand the terrible dynamic between MJ and Paul anymore
Since the preview of the 56th issue has been released to the readers, the fans have taken over X to pour their disappointment on Zeb Wells’ comic run. A massive section of the fandom even agreed that Paul’s character is only introduced as a weapon against the fans instead of having a real purpose in the story.

While most fans are still expecting Peter Parker and MJ to reunite in some way, many others have given up and just hope for the story to end soon.
Yeah, I hate this.

This such an awful sight – another pathetic attempt to make readers believe that there’s no bad history between Peter, MJ and Paul this run, that “we’ve read this run the wrong way”. Such incompetence …

Given how Ultimate Spider-Man is going. Just put Pete and MJ back together in this run. We’ll never like Paul. Fuck off Marvel.

Theres no way they think this normal they have to be deliberately doing this because they hate Peter

I’m not even mad, because being mad is just giving this comic the reaction it wants.

It cannot be denied that thisAmazing Spider-Manrun has significantly impacted the character of Mary Jane. Many ardent fans who have grown up watching this iconic superhero couple can never get over this painful storyline. However, it will be interesting to see how the future of Spider-Man comics plays out as Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.’s much-criticized run finally ends in October this year.
The Amazing Spider-Man#56 will be available from July 24, 2025.
