The PS5 Pro could be getting similar tech to AMD’s new version of FSR next year.

AMD released the next generation of their graphics cards, the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT, last week. They’re built around their new RDNA 4 architecture, which includes hardware support for a new version of FidelityFX Super Resolution, called FSR 4.

PlayStation lead console designer Mark Cerny said in an interview withDigital Foundrythat Sony and AMD are working to bring that tech, which AMD announced in a post onX, was developed alongside Sony as part of an initiative known as Project Amethyst, to PS5 Pro next year.

The PS5 Pro already has upscaling,known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution or PSSR, but integrating it with this new version of FSR could improve its quality significantly, making it closer to Nvidia’s machine learning-based upscaling tech, DLSS.

It’s Not Just About Putting FSR 4 On PS5

One of the biggest differences between FSR 4 and previous versions is that FSR 4 uses hardware-based machine learning for its upscaling to optimize performance, similar to DLSS, unlike previous versions of FSR, which were software-based algorithms that worked on a much wider variety of hardware, but the quality wasn’t as good.

FSR 4, meanwhile, suffers from the same drawback as DLSS in that it’s hardware-dependent,which means it only works on RDNA 4 architecture, which the PS5 Pro is not.

According to one of the developers, Team Asobi was optimizing one of Astro Bot’s sections “until the very end.”

Cerny thinks that shouldn’t be too much of a problem, though, and believes it’s something the PS5 Pro should be able to run without changing its hardware – despite the performance gap between the RX 9070 and 9070 XT compared to the PS5 Pro, not to mention the processing overhead associated with FSR 4.

That is what we are targeting, and we believe we can achieve it.

“RDNA 4 and the hardware in PS5 Pro are completely separate designs, which is why I speak in terms of ‘reimplementation’ on PS5 Pro when I talk about the new upscaling network used in FSR 4,” he says. “I’m definitely looking forward to a future with co-developed hardware features for machine learning that will dramatically increase the interoperability.”

Cerny sees Project Amethyst and FSR 4 going beyond the PS5 and into future console generations and even outside of PlayStation itself, integrating machine learning-based hardware into a variety of devices – AMD has even seen results with it in mobile devices to optimize power efficiency and increase battery life.

Given thelackluster sales of the PS5 Pro, it makes sense that Sony would be looking to improve on the tech going forward. FSR 4 is quite a step up in quality compared to the earlier versions or PSSR, to give the updated console more value for its increased cost.
