Sega and M2 revived theSega Agesbrand in 2018so they could re-release a variety of Genesis and Arcade classics on Nintendo Switch with some special enhancements. Most recently, bothShinobiandFantasy Zonewere re-released this way in January. Today, Sega revealed the next batch ofSega Agestitles and they are both significant for different reasons. The two games in question come out on February 20 areSega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2andSega Ages Puyo Puyo 2.
Starting withSonic the Hedgehog 2, it is already a classic and beloved game that many will be happy to finally have on Nintendo Switch. That being said, some gameplay editions make this release particularly enticing.Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2adds the drop dash from Sonic Mania to players' arsenals. This could open up several new speedrunning and platforming opportunities and is a welcome addition to a game that is already considered one of the best in the series.
Even if the addition of the drop dash isn’t too important for you, this new version ofSonic the Hedgehog 2will also feature a Super Sonic Mode that lets you play as Super Sonic right away, a time trial mode with leaderboards, and will have a playable Knuckles built right into the game. If you want to experience something Sonic-related that’s good after watching what will probably a dumpster fire of a movie adaption, this is a great chance to do so. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch release ofPuyo Puyo 2 is significant in the west as that game has never been localized before. It first came to Japanese arcades in 1994 and has been ported to several systems, but it has never received a full English localization and western release until now. It includes the samePuyo Puyogameplay one would expect, though this version does include online multiplayer and rankings, a rewind button, and a colorblind mode.
