“The colors changed, definitely, and some characters did darken, particularly Anakin,”Biggar said, as she explained that they specifically added leather tabs on his costume, subtly foreshadowing his future transformation into Darth Vader.
“We put leather tabs on him as sort of a forward reflection of the leather that we would see him in later [as Darth Vader],”the costume designer revealed. However, it was nothing less than a challenge as they also had to keep in mind the brighter side of the character.

“It’s such a difficult part, too, to play having to show both sides,”theStar Warscostume designer said while reflecting on the challenges of balancing two different sides of the character through their wardrobe.
Padmé Amidala’s Galactic Fashion Evolution inStar Wars
Padmé Amidala’s costumes remain a highlight of theStar Warsprequel trilogy. In her conversation with StarWars.com, the costume designer Trisha Biggar also reflected on the wardrobe of the character, portrayed byNatalie Portmanin the franchise.
While her attire was elaborate, formal, and heavy, reflecting the responsibilities and gravitas of being a young queen inEpisode 1,her wardrobe underwent a significant transformation as she transitioned from monarch to senator inAttack of the Clones.

Biggar explained that Padmé’s costumes become more practical in subsequent films yet retained a sense of elegance and sophistication befitting her new role.“We were seeing her as a senator and a young woman,”she explained.

Biggar further stated,“She was much more aware of herself. She wasn’t having to be so formal or elaborate. She wasn’t as serious. And, she was falling in love.”She also shared that their experience withThe Phantom Menacehelped them avoid some of the challenges they faced while filmingEpisode I.
Biggar shared that some of the royal headdresses worn by Padmé Amidala were exceptionally intricate and bulky. These designs were so elaborate and heavy that they had to develop pulley systems to support the weight of these headdresses between shots.

“So by the time we got to Attack of the Clones, we were going lightweight with everything,”Biggar shared, highlighting the evolution of both the character’s fashion and the costume designers’ approach across the prequel trilogy.
