Smile 2has received a positive welcome from the audience just like its predecessor. Parker Finn decided to go big with the sequel, setting his story in a big city and casting Naomi Scott in the lead role as world-famous pop star Skye Riley. The Smile Entity, a large skinless humanoid creature, appears to be the only shared aspect in both films, with the exception of Kyle Gallner returning briefly as Joel.

In an attempt to pass on the curse, Joel tries to kill a drug dealer with another dealer as a witness. However, drug dealer Lewis ends up being the inadvertent witness and flees the scene, after inheriting the curse. Skye, who is traumatized by a car crash that killed her boyfriend, relies on Lewis for her Vicodin supply. She witnesses Lewis’ suicide, thus inheriting the smile curse.
Smile 2Ends With Skye Riley Passing On The Curse To A Large Crowd Of People
Naomi Scott‘s Skye Riley has too much on her plate with the pressure of her big comeback tour already mounting on her. When she inherited the curse inSmile 2, she absolutely began to lose her grip on reality and began to hallucinate. Viewers spend the rest of the film trying to figure out what she is hallucinating and what is actually happening to her.
It was almost inevitable that the curse would go viral in this sequel film and making the lead a pop star in the film was an obvious clue for fans. However, Skye’s path to her final moments wasfilled with twists and turns that fans never expected. Things go horribly wrong for Skye when she attends a charity event and her hallucination forces her to improvise her speech into a rant against her career.

The audience is shocked by Skye’s rant. She then sees her deceased boyfriend among the crowd, smiling manically at her which causes her to panic. As a result, she accidentally tackles an elderly patron off the stage. She meets Morris, an ER nurse who claims that they could stop the entity by temporarily stopping Skye’s heart.
Later, she wakes up in a rehab facility after the entity attacks her. To make matters worse, she stabs and kills her mother in a hallucinated state. When she finally attempts Morris’ solution, she finds out that she has been hallucinating the past several days’ events.

When she comes out of her hallucination, she finds herself in front of an audience at Madison Square Garden where she is performing at her concert tour’s opening night. The entity appears amidst the audience, only visible to Skye, and crawls inside her through her mouth. Skye then stands up, smiles at her audience, and stabs herself in the eye in front of thousands of“witnesses”.
Smile 2Doubles Down OnSmile‘s Twist Ending
InSmile, Sosie Bacon’s Rose Cotter tries to die alone in her abandoned family home. In the ensuing struggle with the entity, a fire starts that seemingly kills the monster. Rose then flees the family home and goes to meet Joel, who smiles at Rose. It was at this moment that fans realized that Rose was hallucinating the events of the previous ten minutes in the climax portion of the film.
There Won’t be Any Nepo Baby Argument Around Smile 2- Jack Nicholson’s Son Ray Nicholson Looks Absolutely Creepy and Promising in Latest Trailer
Rose finds herself back at her old house where the humanoid monster possesses her and causes her to set herself on fire in front of Joel.Smile 2goes down this path, confusing viewers with Skye’s hallucinations and reality. While the first film’s hallucinated events lasted a few minutes, it appears that more than half of Parker Finn’sSmile 2events are the hallucinations caused by the Smile Entity.
Fans earlier theorized that Skye, being a performer, could potentially pass on the curse to mass amounts of people. However, by the time the obvious twist hits the screen, viewers almost forget about that due to all the chaos that they just saw as part of Skye’s imagination.

Smile 2is able to make the viewers go back to the older scenes, just to find out what the hallucinations were. This ambiguity appeared to be one of the strongholds of the film, which has earned $109 million at the box office so far against a modest budget of $28 million (via Box Office Mojo). The film opened behind the bigger players at the box office,Venom 3andThe Wild Robot, but it was able tosurpassJoker: Folie à Deux.
Real Or Hallucination: Lewis Passing On The Curse To Skye InSmile 2?
Joel is very much real in the film and is the only returning character from the first film. Earlier, fans believed that Kyle Gallner would lead the sequel film. However, he was killed within the first few minutes of the film. He accidentally passed on the curse to Lewis who then passed it on to Skye. The scenes in the film up until Skye inheriting the curse are very much real.
“I keep seeing his face everywhere”: Smile 2 Trailer Does it Again as the World Gets Ready for Another Creepy Marketing Campaign for Naomi Scott Sequel
Skye tries to carry on with her life despite witnessing Lewis’ horrific death. Things don’t go normal for her as she meets an obsessed fan, who freaks her out. She later experiences some weird things as the entity begins its torment on her. Both the fan and the rehearsals seem to be real in the film.
While Paul Hudson was a real person in Skye’s life, his appearance in the film during the charity event scene was part of Skye’s hallucination.Ray Nicholson, the son of Jack Nicholson and Rebecca Broussard, plays the character of Paul. He appears to have channeled his father’sThe Shiningmoment when playing the brief role.

Until the scenes in the charity, there seems to be clarity for viewers regarding what could be real and what could be a hallucination. However, the clarity slowly gets lost in the further scenes and viewers realize it only after the climax twist.
Real Or Hallucination: Did Dylan Gelula’s Gemma Actually Reconcile With Skye?
Skye’s friend Gemma is one character who is entirely made up by the Smile Entity. Skye and Gemma previously had a fallout after Skye insulted her over a text message. The pop star tries to reconnect with her after her weird experiences. Gemma responds to Skye’s text and agrees to go to her house. Skye then finds the obsessive fan in her apartment, who chases her.

Skye runs outside the house, where she meets Gemma. When Skye asked her how she reached so quickly, Gemma shared that it had been an hour since she called. Gemma and Skye have a conversation about the latter’s experiences. Dylan Gelula’s character disappears when Elizabeth arrives at Skye’s apartment.
Viewers later see her outside the rehab, when she shows up and helps Skye to go see Morris. However, on their way, Skye gets a call from the real Gemma about the texts she had sent earlier about their reconciliation. Skye and the viewers realize that Gemma was a creation of the entity all along. All the scenes with Dylan Gelula in the film are part of Skye’s hallucinations.
Real Or Hallucination: Was Peter Jacobson’s Morris Real?
Peter Jacobson’s Morris is the only one with a solution to Skye’s problem. While Rose is offered a terrible solution in the first film, i.e., to kill someone, Morris offers a much harmless solution. He suggested that stopping Skye’s heart temporarily could leave the parasite without a host. Skye first meets Morris at a bar when he makes this suggestion.
“It was so Gory and so disgusting”: Lukas Gage Was So Afraid During One Scene in Smile 2 He Vomited After the Shot
Skye is forced to leave the bar after the customers recognize her. It appears that this bar encounter with Morris may have actually happened. However, it was her next meeting with Morris that was a hallucination created by the Smile Entity. Skye arrives at the empty Pizza Hut that Morris has rented out for his plan.
When Morris leaves to get something, the entity attacks her in the form of her past version from the car accident. She manages to fight off the entity and inject herself to stop her heart. However, it was revealed to be another fakeout. The Smile Entity pushes her through a door, telling her to“break a leg.”Skye and the viewers learn that the entire second encounter with Morris was part of her hallucination.
Real Or Hallucination: What Happened To Skye’s Mother Elizabeth?
Skye wakes up at a private hospital with her mother Elizabeth waiting by her side. She enters into a heated argument at the end of which Elizabeth smashes a mirror and uses a shard to stab herself. Skye realizes that she might’ve killed Elizabeth as part of her hallucination when she finds the bloody shard in her hands.
She escapes the hospital and has fake encounters with Gemma and Morris, before being pushed onto the stage for the final scene. She finds out that her mother is still alive amidst the audience. Rosemarie DeWitt’s Elizabeth is one of the witnesses to Skye’s gruesome suicide, thus inheriting the smile curse.
Needless to say, Skye’s death at the concert is very much real. This could only change if Parker Finn decides to bring her to life in a third film.Smileis now available for streaming on Hulu.
