In the wake of revealing the latest installment in the long-running franchise, Capcom announced that theResident Evilfranchise has now passed 100 million units sold around the globe.

The information comes by way of Capcom itself who shared the details of this milestone in a newpress release. First started back in 1996,Resident Evilhas become the first series for Capcom that has ever crossed this 100 million threshold. The cumulative sales are comprised of every entry in the history of the franchise that has ever released across all various platforms, too. If it’s aResident Evilgame, it contributed to this total.

Capcom spoke about why it thought thatREof all franchises in its portfolio ended up reaching this mile marker, expressing that it was due to many different aspects. “For theResident Evilseries in particular, becoming the first Capcom series to surpass the 100-million-units-sold milestone came as a result of a number of factors; in addition to maintaining a consistent release schedule for new titles, Capcom utilized cutting-edge technology to reimagine beloved hits, such as withResident Evil 2andResident Evil 3, while carrying out price promotions for back catalog titles timed in conjunction with new title launches,” the publisher explained. It went on to explain that it looks to continue growing the series as next-gen platforms begin arriving while also acknowledging thatResident Evil 7ended up surpassing 7.5 million units in total.

As for what’s next, Capcom just yesterday revealedResident Evil Village, the eighth installment in the mainline series, which is set to arrive next year on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Later this summer Capcom says it will bedisclosing more information aboutVillageat that time.
