At the beginning of the fourth chapter of the Resident Evil 4 Remake, players must solveone of the many puzzlesin the game to access important items. Each puzzle will unlock a door where Leon must interact with two busts - Apostate’s Head and Blasphemer’s Head. Both Heads are intangible; blocked by respective puzzles with coordinating symbols that unlock the door they are kept behind. The coordinating codes to each locked door can be found on the walls in both caves - smeared in yellow paint. The codes are challenging to find - even if and when players encounter the symbols, they can only be read from precise angles.

The symbols are on short pedestals with an octagonal surface in front of their respective doors - each has eight buttons with symbols, and players must press the correct ones. Both pedestals in both the Small and Large Cave Shrines have the same amount of buttons as well as the same symbols. Thankfully, players are not required to hunt down painted symbols and can plug in the correct symbols from this guide.
Small Cave Shrine: Lake Symbol Puzzle Solution
The Small Cave Shrine is in the northeast corner of the map, situated near the dead end of the river. Leon must utilize the speedboat to get to this cave, as it is not accessible any other way. Traversing through the Small Cave Shrine is more accessible than expected, with zero enemies or threats waiting to strike.
Press the corresponding buttons to unlock the door after encountering the pedestal: far left at 9 o’clock, the one directly underneath the previous button, and the one to the right of the lowest button. The buttons do not need to be pressed in any particular order. After plugging in the correct symbols, the door will automatically open, so Leon can remove Blasphemer’s Head.

Large Cave Shrine: Lake Symbol Puzzle Solution
The Large Cave Shrine is to the left of the Mural Cave. Players can find the pedestal to the cave’s far, upper east corner against the wall. Unlike the previous Small Cave Shrine, its larger counterpart is full of enemies. We suggest removing these distractions before attempting to unlock the door to the Apostate’s Head.
At the pedestal, press the following buttons in any order: top corner left, top corner right, and the lowest at 6 o’clock. Now, Leon can enter the now-opened door and remove the Apostate’s Head from its statue.
