Pre-orders are not really my thing, and grabbing Ultimate Editions right from the start is even rarer for me. After all, if I enjoy the base game, I can always snag the extra stuff later at a probably discounted price when I finally get around to playing it. Plus, I’m usually not in a rush to dive into the latest hot titles as soon as they hit the shelves; I prefer toexperience my games in theirdefinitivestate.

WithRemnant 2though, I jumped on the Ultimate Edition pre-order train, and I’ve had zero regrets ever since. Considering how the original Remnant turned out to be one of the most pleasant surprises for me, a bigger and bolder sequel sticking to its winning formula seems like a no-brainer, and I don’t want to miss out on any new content. Looking ahead,Gunfire Gameshas already delivered with Remnant 2, and yet there’s still a lot of potential waiting to be unleashed by the team.

Remnant 2 The Awakened King DLC Exploring Losomn

What impresses me the most here is how the game’s flexible structure makes post-launch support feel genuinely rewarding without dragging on. Only the first of the three promised DLC packs has dropped so far, but it’s already proving how well Remnant 2 lends itself to a steady stream of additional content, peeling back the layers of its lingering mysteries bit by bit.

Realms Unlike Any Other

As I mentioned earlierabout Remnant 2’s Adventure Mode, there are tons of reasons to come back to this game from time to time after finishing the main story, as there’s always more to discover and unseen unique events to experience. The depth of its rich worlds is unmatched, where every element has its own spot and purpose. Even if you’re not actively hunting down bits of lore, you still piece together the bigger picture over time. The first DLC cranks up that sense of a well-considered, believable place, tossing in even more layers to one of the game’s explorable realms.

Picking Apart Remnant 2’s Utterly Wild Ending

Let’s get this story straight.

The DLC doesn’t introduce an entirely new realm to Remnant 2, instead opting to expand the existing Losomn. To me, this is a plus, providing the opportunity to delve deeper into the already-introduced places and their overarching narrative. The new questline, Awakened King, serves as a conclusion to the world’s story revealed so far, intricately tied to everything we’ve learned about this fading world. The DLC introduces fresh areas, enemies, quests, dungeons, and, of course, secrets and treasures, ensuring no one walks away empty-handed.

The Victorian coastal town of Dran takes on a new unsettling beauty here, offering ample contrast to the existing areas of Losomn. The design of the main map, likely the largest in the game to date, possesses many distinctive traits, encouraging you to explore detours and gradually clear obstacles, linking small chunks of the vast area together. Along the way, you’ll encounter various sights, from an eerie abandoned lighthouse to slimy sewers that lead you deep beneath the surface.

While exploring these new locations, you won’t just come across new foes and allies but also encounter familiar faces whose roles are now painted with much more nuance than before, sometimes flipping your perception of key characters upside down. Take the goddess of the Fae, Nimue, whom you initially met in Losomn and who, as I thought, was one of the rare friendly faces during my journey between twisted worlds. After The Awakened King, I’m left quite conflicted about her role in the realm’s fate, not even sure if she deserves to be spared, as I eventually allowed.

Remnant 2: The Awakened King Feels Like Another Bloodborne Homage

(In a good way).

The same applies to many other characters and their errands you can tackle in the expanded regions of Losomn. The possibilities are all there, and with each reroll of your adventure, you’ll uncover more clues, gradually deepening your understanding of Losomn’s key figures and their roles in everything that happened before your arrival. It’s a form of subtle storytelling that demands the player’s attention, for those willing to learn more. But even if you don’t dive too deep into Remnant 2’s complex lore, you’ll still be rewarded with new items, weapons, armor, or perks for your combat build. The game rewards you in a multitude of ways, ensuring that your time with it never feels wasted, even when you’re rerolling the adventure for the third time.

The Sky’s The Limit

In a way, Remnant 2 brings to mindElden Ring. Both are brimming with hard-to-find secrets, sometimes unfolding through multi-step processes and almost too well-hidden to be discovered without a special guide. However, Elden Ring’s world remains entirely static, the same for every player, while Remnant 2 injects random elements into the mix, unveiling its mysteries gradually. It demands that you relive the journey through its fascinating realms again and again.

The way the story of each realm becomes more ‘whole’ with each playthrough seems like the perfect formula for releasing additional DLC over time. It beckons you to return with the assurance that you’ll uncover something new and exciting each time.

Remnant 2 The Awakened King DLC King’s Palace

Based on The Awakened King expanding Losomn, it’s not a wild guess that the next two DLC will likely focus on the existing worlds of Yaesha and N’Erud, as there’s a lot of room left to expand on them as well. I must admit, while I’d be happy to see a completely new world added to Remnant 2 sometime down the road, even if that doesn’t happen, it’s hard to imagine anyone being disappointed by everything the developers have delivered within the existing ones. Given Remnant 2’s flexible structure, any additions are a welcome prospect, and I can’t wait to see the next piece of this intricate puzzle.
