There was a HBCU where we wanted it to take place, and a rocket science club, and in this one they shoot the rockets into the tornado. It was going to be so cool.
To make this idea a reality, Hunt teamed up withHamiltonstar Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, who co-created the Starz seriesBlindspotting. Together, they worked on developing a script that was pioneering. It was a chance to breathe new life into theTwisterlegacy while making the story more inclusive.

Hunt believed her concept had the possibility to be something truly special.“It would have been so cool,”she said. And she’s right. A sequel with a assorted cast, set against the backdrop of an HBCU, could’ve been groundbreaking.
But Hollywood, as it often does, stuck to its comfort zone. Instead of taking a risk on something bold, the studio chose to go in a safer, more accustomed direction with the 2024 reboot.

Oh man, I’m not going to get into it mostly because I’m probably going to misremember things. But all I’ll say is there was an opportunity where we were talking about that, and it didn’t happen, and the reasons that it didn’t happen are potentially shady. But shady in the way that we know the industry is shady.
At its core, the decision wasn’t solely based on the idea’s merit. But Hollywood politics likely influenced the rejection of the project. Turning down Hunt’s pitch feels like a massive missed opportunity. It could have not only honored the originalTwister, but also introduced something daring to the disaster genre.
Instead, we’re left wondering what could have been. WhileTwisters(2024) might be a solid movie in its own right, it’s hard not to think about the potential Hunt’s vision had to revamp Hollywood.
