Psychonauts 2 was originally announced back in 2015, but it took Double Fine nearly six years to release the game in 2021. In the middle of the development process, Double Fine was acquired byMicrosoftin 2019, receiving better financial support for completing its highly anticipated project.
Despite the fact that Psychonauts 2 received a heartwarming welcome from fans and reviewers, it didn’t manage to win any trophies at The Game Awards 2021, though it was nominated in five different categories, including Game of the Year, which was awarded to It Takes Two.
Since the launch of Psychonauts 2, Double Fine has been tight-lipped about its next project. It is yet to be seen what Tim Schafer and his team are dreaming for the future at the moment, but now that they are operating under a tech giant as big as Microsoft, they might not experience the financial difficulties they did when developing Psychonauts 2.
