Power Rangers: Battle for the Gridwasannounced last Thursdayfollowing a leak, but the details tended to skirt around one thing: the game’s story. We learned that the gameplay would be accessible to new players, that it would feature cross-play and progression across PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and that it was a 3v3 fighter trying to evoke the essence of series likeMarvel vs. Capcom.Outside of the fact that differentPower Rangerscharacters from different eras would be coming together somehow, not much was mentioned about a story mode.
In a recent interview with nWay Senior Product Manager Jesse Cherry, DualShockers asked more questions about this aspect ofPower Rangers: Battle for the Grid. While Jesse couldn’t talk too much about story details at this time, he did confirm to us that “Yes, there will be a story mode.”
That being said, Jesse Cherry does say that “you can put pieces together” of what the story may cover from the game’s crossover premise. Last year, to celebratePower Rangers'25 anniversary, a crossover event calledShattered Gridtook place in the comics. Lord Drakkon, an evil version ofMighty MorphinGreen Ranger Tommy Oliver from an alternate dimension was the main villain of the event, and Jesse did confirm to me that Lord Drakkon is in the game as a villain.
With the similarity in concept, title, and even one of the featured villains, it seems quite likely thatPower Rangers: Battle for the Grid’sstory may not be too dissimilar to 2018’sShattered Gridevent. Even though Jesse mostly said that “We’ll talk more about it in the future” when it came to story-related questions, we did get a few interesting responses on behind-the-scenes things related to the development of the story. We asked him just how far intoPower Rangers’lore this game goes, and Jesse had the following to say:
“In terms of what we want to do for Power Rangers fans, similar to what we’ve done in our previous projects, we are grabbing from different eras of Power Rangers. I would say a big, important part for us is to make sure that people that left the brand or stopped watching the show at different times will have elements in Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid that will bring them back and then we can introduce them new interesting stuff.”
When it comes to the characters nWay chose to feature, Jesse says they learned fromPower Rangers: Legacy Wars “which characters players gravitated towards” but did confirm that “We also wanted to surprise [fans] in a few ways.” We asked if the actors from each series would return and if Zords were an integral part of Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid’sstory, but both question were shot down with “I can’t go into whether that is or isn’t the case until a later date.”
For now, it seems like nWay, Hasbro, and Lionsgate are more keen on showing gameplay rather than Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid’s story, but DualShockers will be sure to let you know when more details are revealed. In the same aforementioned interview, nWay’s Jesse Cherry also made it very clear thatPower Rangers: Battle for the Gridis not a mobile port.
Power Rangers: Battle for the Gridwill be available digitally for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One this April while a PC release is set to follow sometime afterwards in 2019. The game can currently be pre-orderedvia Battle for the Grid’s official website.Stay tuned to DualShockers for morePower Rangers: Battle for the Gridcoverage this week.
