When people hear the name PlayStation, what comes to mind are their consoles. The shape and size have changed over the years, with the PS5 towering over all the others, but the name is now synonymous with Sony in gaming circles.

While the company has always been a console-first force in gaming, it has also dabbled in the handheld side. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) offered users a wide variety of functions, and it quickly climbed the charts to become a best-seller. If rumors are to be believed, Sony may be looking to revive this system.
Reliable Source Hints at a New PlayStation Portable System
The first PSP was launched in 2005 and became a roaring success. Selling over 80 million units, it was only overshadowed by its competitor, the Nintendo DS. Even so, the system will go down in history as one of the most innovative handhelds. Sony followed up with the PSP Go and the PS Vita, but neither did as well as the original.

It seems every major gaming company is now looking to get into handhelds. We haverumors of one being developed by Xbox, which could have been a catalyst for Sony to get the ball rolling. A fresh rumor suggests the company may be working on a new PSP that will be capable enough to run PS4 games!

The rumor comes from the ResetEra forum, and all credit is being directed at user Iroshino. Russian journalist Anton Logvinov, the first person to confirm Sony’s plan to port exclusives to PC, confirmed Sony is working on a handheld that can run games from the previous generation.
By the way, I can confirm that Sony is preparing a new PSP for release, but damn – there are only PS4 games in the launch lineup, which are generally available on PC, and therefore on Steam Deck. Retail chains, by the way, are quite sceptical. Either Sony is doing something completely, or they are still keeping secrets from their partners.

Gamers Have Entered an Era of Handhelds and Pocket PCs
Sony’s consoles are still flying off the shelves but it seems handhelds are now making a big comeback. The Steam Deck was one of the most popular and gave rise to several competitor portable PC systems. We also havenews of a Nintendo Switch 2 to be announced soon. Portable gaming is making a big comeback, and the future looks bright.
“PS6 will have a handheld version”: With the Deal Signed, You Can Forget the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Xbox’s Not So Secret Version, Sony are Going for Gold Next Generation
The biggest issue with handheld gaming was the lack of power that could fit in such small casings. Even the current Nintendo Switch can only run games at 1080p when docked. Technology has evolved greatly since then, and we now have the capability of running 4K titles in the palm of our hands.
We assume it’s going to be a while before Sony is ready to fill us in on their plans. But this news is sure to get people talking, and listening to the chatter should give Sony some great ideas when it comes to developing this system.
