Astarion’s Complex Background Becomes Even More Elusive

Over on Reddit, where all the cool stuff happens, usera-flying-fox, posted that they had been completing an origin playthrough as Bard Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3. While visiting the Ornate Mirror in the Blighted Village, which is in the cellar of the big house just left as you enter the town, they were posed with the question that asked: “If you could see anything in me, what would it be?”. The magic mirror then gave four options and one of them was very interesting indeed.

The top option for Astarion was “I’d see my home. Myrealhome - the one I haven’t seen in centuries”. Of course, this dialogue option has left BG3 players confused about where Astarion actually comes from, as many believed he was from Baldur’s Gate, but now, ahost of theoriesare being thrown about.

One comment suggested that because of Astarion’s noble class, and since Cazador does not attack the rich of Baldur’s Gate so as not to create any chaos, he could very well have moved to Baldur’s Gate to become a magistrate and originally lived somewhere like Evereska, Evermeet or the Dalelands where a lot of High Elves hail from. There’s also the theory that if his “family” were from Baldur’s Gate, “he would inevitably have crossed paths with them or stumbled upon them by chance.”

Throughout the thread, there’s a mishmash of those who believe he could be from somewhere else and those who think Baldur’s Gate is definitely his home. In regard to the magic mirror’s dialogue, a commenter thinks that Astarion is “referring to somewhere in Baldur’s Gate, considering he worked there before Cazador” and how it would “really suck knowing your old house is a couple of streets away, but never getting to go.” since he is a 239 years oldvampire and needs to be invited into homes since a lot of time now has past and buildings wouldn’t be under the same ownership.

Although we may not know for absolute certainty where Astarion originally came from, unless Larian Studios decides to elaborate more on his backstory, it’s certainly fun to see so many players go down rabbit holes and produce cool theories on characters, especially when it’s from something as huge as Baldur’s Gate 3.
