Persona 5 Tacticadoes a lot to adapt the established combat system in the original game over to the top-down tactics style of this latest spin-off. While the base game alone hours many hours of content, the DLC, Repaint Your Heart, offers additional characters, story, and gameplay mechanics.

True to the name of the DLC, battles in this new campaign involve both the player and enemies trying to pain the battlefield, receiving benefits when standing in their own paint and negative effects when standing in the other side’s paint. While the system is briefly explained, players are quickly thrown into battles where paint can make or break a fight.

The Effects Of Paint

ThePhantom Thieves' color of paint is light blue, and the enemy’s color is pink. The rules for paint apply for both sides, with theeffects of paint being more important and overriding cover. When a character stands in their own team’s paint, they willresist all damage and have the benefits of cover even when out in the open.Characters canonly make attacks anduse skillswhen standing on a square of their own team’s coloror no color at all.

Hitting an enemy with either an attack or skill will have afew squares around them, and the one they are standing on will be painted as the attacking team’s color, letting a follow-up attack on that enemy grant a One More. Standing on your team’s color takes priority over cover, as getting attacked while on the other team’s color, even in cover, will reward the attacker with a One Moreand knock down whoever was attacked.

When standing onunpainted ground, the regular rules of the game still apply, with cover being very useful to resist the damage of the first attack. There are also a few missions withgrates on the ground, which can be stood on but also can’t be painted. These can be utilized along with proper cover to avoid the effects of paint and focus on playing the game as usual, but grates are few and far between throughout the DLC.

P5T gives players the ability to fuse specific Personas into powerful guns to be used in combat; here’s how it works.

Tricks For Painting The Battlefield

Due to the importance of paint, cover is not as useful throughout the DLCexcept for getting HP/SP. Having two characters target the same enemy willalways have the second attack knocking down the enemy, as the first attack will paint the ground around them. This makes it inevitable thatyour characters will get knocked down often, so it’s best not to worry about cover as much andplay aggressively to double up attacks on enemiesto also always get One Mores. Using awide area of attack skill from Personasis also useful for hitting multiple enemies and painting the ground around them, lining up multiple One Mores from another teammate to take advantage of.

Barrels are littered around missions, and while shooting them can paint the area around an enemy from a distance, melee attacks are much more useful. When attacking a barrel with melee, the barrel will beknocked back, painting the area under where it travels and exploding upon impact.Missions in the Repaint Your Heart DLC don’t haveturn limitations or bonuses, so it’s best toslow down and use the first turn or two to focus on painting the battlefieldas much as possible first.
