Barbiewas the clear winner in the battle of the Barbenheimer in 2023, as the Margot Robbie-led film left behind Cillian Murphy’sOppenheimerat the box office with a remarkable worldwide collection of $1.4 billion. The latter could only amass $955.6 million.

The fantasy comedy also ended the year on high, dominating the Golden Globes Awards nominations with nine nods. However, the 2024 awards season hasn’t been as prolific forBarbie, withOppenheimersweeping the big share of the honors.
The recently announced Oscar nominations suggest the trend is likely to continue. If anything, this time, the grim documentary feature has left behindBarbieand pushed its way into a category that many expected Robbie’s movie to win.

As part ofBarbie’spromotional run,Margot Robbieattended almost every event donning outfits inspired by different Barbie dolls last summer. This underlined that apart from Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s screenplay; Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s acting talents, the makeup of the main character is going to be a big feature of Barbie.
According to a report inGlamour, 48 hair pieces, 25 lipstick shades, custom eyebrows, and body paint were used to transform theBabylonstar into the iconic doll.

“Every single Barbie and Ken, we designed individually,”hair and makeup artist Ivana Primorac revealed.“We designed the makeup, the skin tone, everything that suits them best. Everyone had their own team of hair and makeup artists.”
However, despite such a huge emphasis on recreating fascinating and different looks for the residents of Barbie Land,Barbiefailed to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Oppenheimer, Golda, Maestro, Society of the SnowandPoor Thingsare in the running for the honor.

Oppenheimeris also leading the pack with a staggering 13 nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Director, for the 96th Academy Awards. Emma Stone starrer feminist fantasy,Poor Things, is just behind it with 11 nods.
Barbieunderwhelmingly received eight nominations, two less than third-placedKillers of the Flower Moon.
As far as major individual awards are concerned, Robbie was shut out by the decision-makers.Cillian Murphy, meanwhile, earned his first Oscar nod and is competing with the likes of Bradley Cooper and Paul Giamatti for Best Actor.
Gosling is impressively in the race for Best Supporting Actor. He’s up against Robert Downey Jr. and Robert De Niro among others.
