The Joker has become a character in popular culture and every actor involved in his crafting for any adaptation has brought something unique to its performance. Be it Jack Nicleson’s gangster, Ceaser Romero’s clown, Heath Ledger’s terrorist, or Joaquin Phenoix’s lonely man, there have been few stand-out scenes that have defined the character’s live-action presence.

While Heath Ledger’s Joker is considered to be one of the best versions of the character in live-action, Cameron Monaghan has come close to rivaling what the former was able to do with the character. While Monaghan’s performance can be considered as more of an extroverted take on Ledger’s Joker, there is one scene fromGothamthat might have cemented him as the next great Joker actor in Hollywood.

Jerome Valeska might not be The Joker, but he sure does give him a run for his money

The Valeska twins served as expys for Batman’s most famous nemeses inGotham. While Jeremiah Valeska wore a costume that would be more akin to the Joker, Jerome Valeska did justice to the moniker without ever adopting it, and fans could not agree more.

the reason this is so good is subtleeverything he says before pulling the trigger is a set up to the punchline being that the gun goes off

Cameron Monaghan played about four different versions of the Joker in this I think, drawing on comics and movies and every one was terrifying and compelling. Just fantastic work

I like how they were originally planning to have multiple people play potential suspects for the Joker (so we’d never truly know his real identity like in the comics), but Cameron Monaghan was so good that they threw up their hands and just said, “Yeah, he’s the Joker”.

Heath Ledger

genuinely the best joker, would’ve liked him to be the dcu joker but star wars probably has him locked into a 30 year contract by now

Has got to be one of the best live action ‘Joker’ portrayals I’ve ever seen. I go back to Gotham specifically for Jerome

Honestly, would not mind it one bit if Cameron Monaghan was cast as Joker for The Batman sequel(s). We know that he would deliver.

Cameron Monaghan is a top 3 live action Joker for sure, maybe even top 2

J.K. Rowling’s Biggest Harry Potter Plothole: First Female Death Eater’s Age Makes No Sense

Despite playing only a facsimile of the character and not the character itself, Jerome Valeska remains one of the most intriguing takes on the Joker. Being a criminally insane character on the run, along with his own version of Harley Quinn in Barbara Keen, the character, despite being an original addition to a mediocre show, shone through the plot and writing with his performance.

Heath Ledger remains the gold standard for the Joker in live-action films

There were more than a few high-profile successors to Heath Ledger’s Joker, such as Joaquin Phoenix’s character study under Todd Phillips’ direction, or Jared Leto’s stint with the character in David Ayers’sSuicide Squad. Of course, there was also Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska, butHeath Ledger‘s version of the character remains the most widely known and appreciated version of The Joker.

Under Christopher Nolan’s expert direction, with co-stars like Christian Bale andAaron Eckhart, Heath Ledger still remains the yardstick against which other versions of the characters are mapped and contrasted. Ledger was set to return as the character inDark Knight Rises. However, his untimely passing cemented the single appearance of his character as one of the best adaptations of a comic book character.
