Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball universe has featured a lot of epic power-ups and transformations, but nothing compares to the Super Saiyan power-up by the legendary Saiyan race that unlocked an entirely new narrative for the story. As the story progressed, Super Saiyan went on to become one of the most important aspects of the Dragon Ball series.

So much so that Toriyama decided to introduce different variations that were stronger than the previous transformation and make them look even more intense. However, these Super Saiyan power-ups stopped after Super Saiyan 3. Although fans did get to see Super Saiyan 4, it was a part of the non-canonical Dragon Ball GT.
While fans demanded more Super Saiyan power-ups, Toriyama decided to change the Super Saiyan power-ups into Super Saiyan God transformations that sounded cooler and increased the overall strengths of the characters to a different level. The mangaka once revealed the reason why Goku would never unlock Super Saiyan 5.

The Super Saiyan Power-Ups in the Dragon Ball Universe
When adult Goku first debuted in the Dragon Ball manga, he shocked the entire fandom with a power-up called Kaio-ken. He learned the power-up from King Kai and used it against Vegeta. However, as the story progressed, Toriyama decided to bring about a new transformation that was only limited to the Saiyan race. This transformation was called Super Saiyan.

The Super Saiyan first debuted in 1991, when Goku was battling Frieza on Planet Namek. This was something totally unique, and fans loved it, making it one of the best power-ups in history. Ultimately, Toriyama decided to increase the levels of Super Saiyan and named them Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3.
Super Saiyan 2 was first introducedduring the Cell game arc, when Gohan was fighting Cell. He was the first Saiyan to unlock the Super Saiyan transformation as a kid. Later on, during the Buu saga, Goku was able to unlock Super Saiyan 3 through vigorous training, and that was the last Super Saiyan power-up Dragon Ball fans got to see.

Akira Toriyama’s Reason for Not Going Further With Super Saiyan Transformations
In the Saikyō Jump June 2014 Issue, which was later translated byKazenshuu, Toriyama was asked about the Super Saiyan transformations and whether Dragon Ball fans will ever get to see Super Saiyan 5. The manga creator revealed that Super Saiyan transformations are nothing more than the power-up variations of Super Saiyan.
Toriyama stated:
Super Saiyan 2 and 3 are nothing more than powered-up variations of Super Saiyan. After the fight with Beerus, Goku realized that mastering his normal state and Super Saiyan would raise his level more and sap less strength, so I think he probably won’t become Super Saiyan 2 or 3 anymore.
According toAkira Toriyama, after his encounter with Beerus, Goku discovered that mastering his regular state and Super Saiyan wouldimprove his level and drain less strength.

Therefore, there is a good probability he will not become Super Saiyan 2 or 3, much less Super Saiyan 5, as it only levels up his Super Saiyan form.
