Christina Applegate has starred in some of the best pieces of all time and has never once failed to leave her fans amused by her outstanding performances. But as iconic as her performances are, she struggles with a painful medical condition in real life that oftentimes leaves her in tears due to the pain: Multiple sclerosis (MS), which she was diagnosed with in 2021.
However, while the official diagnosis for the same didn’t quite come to light well until she was already knee-deep into the autoimmune disease, theFRIENDSactress could have identified it much earlier. This is because symptoms of the same were visible early on when she was busy working on her hit Netflix seriesDead to Me, only she couldn’t connect the dots early on.

According to details provided byRadarOnline.com, Christina Applegate believes that a fall she underwent while working on her smash hit Netflix seriesDead to Mewas a consequence of the autoimmune disease she later went on to be diagnosed with. Speaking of her fall, she reportedly said: “Hi, first sign of MS! So, not to bring everybody down, but there it was.“
Liz Feldman, the 47-year-old creator of the said fan-favorite thriller drama, admits to the same, noting that she also witnessed the actress experiencing physical symptoms of the illness during the three years she worked on it. However, back then, even she couldn’t help but chalk it all down to the long working hours they were going through on set.
Feldman shared the same whilejustifying her reasoning, saying, “I remember you losing your balance when we were shooting the pilot a couple of times. It was very hard to figure it out because, you know, I remember one time, it was really late at night. We’d been shooting probably 14 or 15 hours … it seemed completely reasonable that anybody would be collapsing.“

For those unversed, Applegate suffers from an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system called multiple sclerosis. The early signs of this illness include weakness, tingling or loss of feeling in the hands, loss of coordination while walking, fatigue, and dragging a foot or leg — some of the very things Feldman confessed she witnessed Applegate experiencing.
Soon after she started working on this series,theFRIENDSactress‘ symptoms became worse. By the time she came down to filming the third season of the Netflix series in August 2021, she found herself diagnosed with the said disease. However, even this didn’t stop Applegate from working, as she continued to give an impeccable performance even in season 3 ofDead to Me.

While it wasChristina Applegate‘s decision to continue to work despite being diagnosed with a disease that has since been leaving her in painful conditions – including experiencing constant pain, seizure-like feelings in her brain, hand issues, 30 lesions on her brain, and difficulty standing for long periods of time – Liz Feldman insured all her empathy for the actress amid her health crisis.
As shared by RadarOnline.com, she “just always tried to put [Applegate’s] health first in my mind” as the cameras rolled on the thriller masterpiece during the shoot of the third season. If anything, she put her lead actress’ health and well-being a priority over her ‘just a TV show.‘
“At the end of the day, yeah, maybe it’ll reach people and help people and entertain people, but this is your life,” she told Applegate.Explaining how she herself felt about it all, Feldman also said, “I could just sense A, that she was scared, and B, that something was wrong … that something in her body was not working the way that she wanted it to. There’s no handbook for this. I can’t compare it to any experience I’ve ever gone through with a person before.“

Inevitably enough, all of that must have been an incredibly hard time for theMarried… with Childrenactress, so the support she claims to have received from the Netflix show’s creator and crew also had her expressing her gratitude to all of them. She said,“That would not happen anywhere else, so my gratitude towards you guys being humans… is astounding.”
All in all, even though the medical condition stayed and continues to leave her in immense pain at times, Christina Applegate was still able to create some of the best memorieswhile working on the series.
Then there are the two nods for Primetime Emmys she received for her outstanding work on the show in the lead role, so the actress might as well be given all the credit she most certainly deserves – not only for her performance but also for her beyond-brave personality.
