Suda 51, the creator of theNo More Heroesand Killer 7 IPs, spoke about his future projects ina recent interview with Famitsu. He said thatamong the three gameshis studio,Grasshopper Manufacture, plans to produce in the next decade, one of them will be an original action game on a larger scale than anything he has created before.
According to Suda, the project began around January 2022, shortly after the studio was acquired byNetease Games. The game should have a similar direction to the studio’s previous two games, Travis Strikes Again and No More Heroes 3, but the scale will be much more different. Also this time, the goal is to address the shortcomings of the previous action games and refine the studio’s brand of exhilarating action-packed experiences.

Two major issues brought to Suda’s attention by player feedback (more apparent than ever in No More Heroes 3) are the low-quality backgrounds and the studio’s inability to take full advantage of the density and scale of large maps. That’s why Grasshopper is currently working with external studios to improve these aspects. A diorama of the city that will make up the setting of the new game was also shown in the interview, but the image appeared rather blurry as the studio is not yet ready to reveal it.
Suda also expressed his intent to make a non-text game. In other words, a game that isn’t reliant on scenarios unlike most of his story-focused games, and said he has been thinking about a project like this for a long time. He also added that the studio’s focus on the three next games doesn’t mean there won’t be any remakes or remasters along the way.
Two teaser images for the next original action IP were shown during the interview. One of them depicts a sword that seems to be taken straight out of aZeldagame. Another image shows a character that seems to be a reference to Shounen Jump’s new manga,Chainsawman. It’s a character who seems to be armed with weapons all over his body, holding a chainsaw-like sword in his hand, and even chainsaws on his head and both shoulders, so it’s hard to ignore the influence upon looking at it.
