After four years since the latest release in theVirtua Fightergame series with Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, we now have confirmation that a new Virtua Fighter game is in the works at SEGA.
There’s A New Virtua Fighter Game On The Way
The new addition was confirmed in aninterviewwith SEGA’s Global Head of Transmedia, Justin Scarpone. The executive just casually mentioned, “So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.”

Unfortunately, that confirmation is all we got. There’s no release date, no title, and no platform on which it will be available. Franchise fans will be glad to hear that a new one is in development, and we’re hoping more news about it (and an official announcement) will happen in 2025.

While the Virtua Fighter franchise might not be as popular as Bandai Namco’s Tekken series today, it is the franchise that kickstarted the genre in 1993. Since then, we’ve gotten multiple sequels and spin-offs, with the latest game titled “Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown” which was released back in 2021 on the PS4 and arcades.
As someone who used to play it a bit back then, I can say it’s a more technical fighter than Bandai Namco’s Tekken franchise. However, it lacks that explosiveness and does look a lot less flashy, which could contribute to why it’s less popular than Tekken.

In terms of the latest release, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown is a solid fighter. Asmentioned in our review, “Virtua Fighter has one of the most dedicated fanbases of all fighters, so you can feel confident that this game will still be played by many, even years after release. Fighting fans will definitely want to scrape their change together for this release.”
