My Hero Academiaended on 02 June 2025 with an anti-climatic, disappointing story that brought a lot of heat on Kohei Horikoshi. However, even the fans who hate his writing cannot deny his genius, specifically the way he ties in his storylines and how the ending came full circle in the best way possible.

The last volume’s cover ofMy Hero Academia,Volume 42, directly references the first-ever volume’s cover, with Izuku Midoriya in the center, the entire Class 1-A, Eraser Head, and Hitoshi Shinso inspiring a young aspiring hero instead. It parallels the first volume cover.
Horikoshi managed to come full circle with the story. From Izuku being inspired by All Might and other Pro Heroes to Dai being inspired by Izuku and Class 1-A, the nostalgia doesn’t get better than this. It ties the entire theme ofMy Hero Academiatogether and reminds the fans what it was about all along; to save others and inspire each other.

My Hero Academia’sParallel Volumes Show Horikoshi’s Message
The beginning ofMy Hero Academiadepicted Izuku Midoriya as a Quirkless boy and his intense admiration for Pro Heroes. He becomes the successor of All Might pretty quickly and the Pro Hero vows to train him no matter what. It’s a touching relationship that evolves over time and the first volume ofMy Hero Academiareflects Izuku’s love and devotion towards being one. Now that the manga has ended, the last volume mirrors this dynamic with Dai and displays Izuku with his battle scars and the Class 1-A that helped his journey.

Volume 42 has been highly praised for the direct reference to the first-ever volume and howKohei Horikoshidid it so naturally. It brought tears to some fans’ eyes with some calling it peak, not losing any faith in the mangaka. The parallel depicts exactly whatMy Hero Academiahas been about. It inspires anyone to be a hero, no matter their background. Izuku is the picture of that, from Quirkless to being worthy to be the next carrier of One for All. Now it must be Dai’s turn.

THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND PEAK !!!!!!!!pic.twitter.com/Psft1tKKwu

This cover looks too BEAUTIFUL🥺😭😭🥹🥹
OMG THE NOSTALGIA!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS!! 😭😭😭
While it’s still debatable if Izuku is a well-written character with the ending, the Volume 42 cover art still brings out a sense of nostalgia and pride for his journey. Kohei Horikoshiclearly loves his charactersand it does show with his homage to Class 1-A, something fans probably also didn’t expect.
Does It Excuse the Ending ofMy Hero Academia?
With the path that Izuku Midoriya took inMy Hero Academia, the story fell off pretty quickly after that. The events weren’t that interesting and none of the plot points were resolved by the end. The protagonist was supposed to be the epitome and future of heroism and the figure of Horikoshi’s message. He did all of that training just to become a vigilante and then ended up Quirkless again. This divergence made no sense.
My Hero Academia: Kohei Horikoshi Really Fumbled the Ball by Not Confirming a Theory That Could’ve Given MHA a Game of Thrones Level Twist
Moreover, the fans don’t end up seeing Izuku actually in the process of becoming stronger. The first few seasons and volumes did a fantastic job of showing his growth but it eventuallybecame rushedand then amounted to nothing. Horikoshi undeniably ruined Izuku’s character and purpose and the last volume’s cover doesn’t hide it.
My Hero Academiais available on Crunchyroll and VIZ Media.
