We’re living in topsy-turvy times. Just when everyone thought that the Box Office slump was gone for good (after what has been a blockbuster Thanksgiving for the industry), signs of slack are becoming evident all over again.

Mufasa: The Lion Kingwas the perfect film to bring this year to an end. After all, it fits the template of the movies that have worked so far in 2024. But the updated predictions have given Disney many reasons to be worried about.
Mufasa: The Lion Kingis all set to have an underwhelming start at the domestic Box Office
In what has been an unsuccessful year for movies over the board, sequels have managed to pump above their wait (sorryJoker 2,you’re not a part of the list). Starting withDune: Part 2,the box office has been grateful to other projects that already have a connection with the fans.
Not to forget, Disney movies have been key beneficiaries of the phenomenon. WhileInside Out 2bagged a little over $1.6 billion over its theatrical run,Moana 2has brokena chunk of Thanksgiving records by a margin.

Seeing the healthy response Disney was receiving from fans, one wouldn’t fault them for believing thatMufasa: The Lion Kingwould be the perfect movie to end the year on a high.
After all, it was a prequel to the highly lovedThe Lion King. The 2019 flick grossed $1.6 billion worldwide over its theatrical run. It would be anyone’s guess that the prequel would manage to repeat the feat with success. But if the updated Box Office predictions are anything to go by, that might be far from true.

International audience will come to the aid ofMufasa: The Lion King
Directed byBarry Jenkins, the prequel is all set to witness the likes ofAaron Pierre,Mads Mikkelsen,Beyonce, andDonald Gloverlend their voices to a sleuth of iconic characters. As if that wasn’t enough to entice fans, it is supposed to be a tale about Mufasa.
Turns out that won’t be enough to propel it to a stellar box office performance, as the movie is only expected to open domestically below $50 million.

‘MUFASA: THE LION KING’ underperforms and is now tracking for an opening below $50M domestically. However, the film is on track to open big internationally with a near $180M globally. The film had a $200M budget.pic.twitter.com/lqR4Jj3T8d
To put things in context,Moana 2had a domestic 3-day opening of $139.7 million. The Lion Kingsailed to $191 million in its debut domestic weekend. These figures must be putting Disney in a spot of bother. And that might be in no small part down to its competition withSonic The Hedgehog 3.

Oh we’re still pushing the 180 globally still huh? Even tho it majorly underperformed with even previews?
Muflopsa is the timeline we need but international audiences are gonna bail it out 💔
Made on a $200 million budget, the movie received lukewarm responses at its previews. And the domestic box office was almost going to cost Disney big time. But it seems like the international audiences will bail them out.

The film looks set to open internationally with nearly $180 million globally. All in all, the movie looks set to sail in the right direction over its theatrical run. But it will be far from recreating the exploits the 2019 film made.
