The epic revisionist Western film retold the story of American outlaws Jesse James and Robert Ford, the latter of whom killed the former and went on to capitalize on the murder. Morgan Freeman, one of the greatest actors to have blessed the film industry, couldn’t stop watching the film for all the right reasons.
An Underrated Brad Pitt Film
Brad PittandMorgan Freemanstarred inSe7en(1995), an unforgettable film about a serial killer hell-bent on finding prey that fit the narrative of the seven deadly sins. The movie was a total hit at the box office as well as among the audience. Despite having been released almost 30 years ago,Sevenhas remained a fan-favorite and rightly so.
However, it looks like Freeman has another Pitt film he is a huge fan of –The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.The 2007 movie by Andrew Dominik follows the story of Jesse James (Pitt) and Robert Ford (Casey Affleck).

While Ford idolizes James, he tries his best to inform the latter’s group but jealousy soon takes over and he ends up killing the man he once looked up to. Ford would then go on to reenact the killing for his audience along with his brother but things turned sour when people started hailing the late James as a legend and him as a coward.
Despite the positive critical reception,The Assassination of Jesse Jamesfailed to perform at thebox office, making only $15.3 million on a budget of $30 million. Regardless, the film is loved by many who consider it to be an underrated gem under Pitt’s belt. In 2007, the title was seen among many critics’Top Ten filmsfor the year, coming first place in Film Threat and The Hollywood Reporter lists.

Morgan Freeman Was Head Over Heels for the Movie
While in conversation withAlex Simon, Freeman talked aboutGone Baby Gone(2007) where they praised the cast, especiallyCasey Affleck, for his work as Patrick Kenzie.
Freeman then revealed that he had just watched Pitt and Affleck’sThe Assassination of Jesse Jamesand was basically blown away by it all so much so that he had to keep replaying the film just in case he missed out on a few details.

Well, I just watched ‘The Assassination of Jesse James’, and was just blown away…Yeah, in fact, I had to keep rewinding it and watching it over because I felt I was missing things, it was so rich.
When asked if the film reminded him of early Terrence Malick or Robert Altman’sMcCabe & Mrs. Miller(1971), Freeman stated,“Yes, very much. Casey was great, and I thought Brad (Pitt) did a great job. Just kept it very low.”He praised the film for perfecting“the tiniest detail.”

Pitt, too, loved the movie despite its performance. He once toldGQ Style, “My favorite movie is the worst-performing film of anything I’ve done, ‘The Assassination of Jesse James.’ If I believe something is worthy, then I know it will be worthy in time to come.”It sure keeps getting more and more worthy with time!
