Popular Canadian singer-songwriter, Shawn Mendes, recently announced his return after taking a break from the industry to focus on his well-being. But several months ago, strange controversies emerged about the singer, and it is all because of one rumor.

A gossip podcast speculated Mendes’s links with a new spiritual group or ‘cult,’ based on unfounded theories. Shockingly, another famous singer was also previously suspected of being a part of said cult. However, loyal fans of the singer stepped up to his defense and rallied against the baseless rumors.
The rumor mill goes wild: fans to the rescue
It all started with a whisper,a podcast with celebrity gossiperDeuxMoi,who allegedly received tips from ‘fans’ about Shawn Mendes’ association with a cult. The organization in question is the Modern Mystery School, which claims to be a spiritual group, providing services to the public.
Flames were fanned when people began linking Charlie Travers, supposedly the singers’ new girlfriend, to be a part of the said cult.It took on further when a video was posted featuring her andMendesdoing a breathing exercise on a beach.

Fans have been noticing that Shawn Mendes has been associating with people who are part of the Modern Mystery School. One of those people being his new alleged girlfriend, Charlie

But it should be taken into notice that the singer has been silent on this topic, and he didn’t even publicly claim Travers to be his partner. Seemingly finding courage due to his lack of a response, his fans rose to the rescue and defended the so-called cult allegations.
So we’re supposed to believe your bullshit sources that say Shawn Mendes is in a cult? People hate on Shawn Mendes daily for no good reason and yall are just fuelling the fire and spreading negativity

The Mendes army then rallied against the podcaster, claiming their source to be fake. The singer had taken a break for his well-being and was also absent on social media. Unfortunately, people misunderstood this absence as a sign of him joining a cult.
The possible truth behind the lies: what cult?
Previously the 2024Grammy-winning singer,Miley Cyrus was also accused of having joined the spiritual organization. This rumor was born when a picture started circulating on X, which featuredCyrusalong with two women- ‘Lily Ashwell’ and ‘Blue’. People started spreading rumors that these women were members of the Modern Mystery School and were trying to recruit the singer to join them.
Though she herself did not respond to these rumors, her sister Brandi Cyrus dismissed them on the singer’s behalf. She reassured fans that theFlowerssinger was busy with her music and did not have the time to join any institution.

And she’s not doing those things, so people say crazy shit.
Apparently, back in 2021, Vice investigated the mystery school, and published an article containing complaints from the former students, who called it a ‘scam’ and ‘cult’. It entailed how they were exploited, faced bullying and manipulation and some even accused the organisation of financial and sexual exploitation.Vicealso learned that students were asked to sign an NDA, compelling them to speak positively about the school and its members.

So though the ‘school’ does sound shady on the surface, there is no confirmation on whether Mendes or Cyrus were ever actual members. Since both the singers have maintained silence and have not shared their side of the story, this may be just a baseless rumor.
